Hi,

A friend of mine is selling a 2002 2.7 Boxster 30k miles. Is there anything I should look out for? Any issues? Anything I should be wary of to avoid? What would be a good price?

Thanks in advance.

A 2002 2.7l Boxster is tops in my book. I own one (from new) and my time with my 02 2.7l Boxster has been a blast. The car now has over 258K miles on it.

What to look for? In short everything.

The 2002 2.7l Boxster is just a used car and in the case of this car albeit with not many miles.

But still, a thorough used car check out is paramount.

Visit the car cold, with the A/C off and be sure the CEL and other warning lights come on then go off when you turn the key to on then start the engine.

Let the engine idle. Idle speed will be a bit high (around 1K) but drop as the engine idles and warms up. Idle should be smooth and get smoother as the engine warms.

There can be a bit of clatter upon cold start and maybe a brief cloud of oil smoke but as long as the clatter goes away as soon as you notice it and the smoking is brief and the engine exhibits no other untoward behavior nothing to worry about.

After the engine has idled to nearly warm have the seller take you out for a test ride. Focus on the car.

The route should cover 15 miles and give the driver a chance to demo the car in a variety of scenarios like city stop/go driving, low/medium and high speed cruising.

You want the engine/car subjected to some hard acceleration too. The engine should pull from idle to redline and with a quick upshift continue to pull to redline with no issues. My Boxster shifts very quick and the shifter moves from gear to gear like a hot knife through soft butter. Original shifter, tranny, and even clutch, too. (Driver's side floor mat worn out though, darnit.)

After the test ride take the car out as a driver and follow the same route, drive the car the same way as the driver did the 1st time over the route.

After the test ride/drive if you still like the car give it a thorough used car check out. Be sure everything works.

After this checkout if you still like the car and believe you can buy it for a reasonable price have the car PPI'd.

Among other things -- there's a zillion things to check but I don't have the time/room to list them all -- the PPI looks for signs of accident damage, bad paint/body work, signs of any fluid leaks, listens for scary noises you might be aware of, smells the car for any signs it has been flooded and so on. Like I said about a zillion things...

I'd like to see the oil filter housing oil in a clean drain pan and a DME overrev counter read out too.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

- carpets for damp / drainage under hood
- ignition switch
- dodgy microswitches for roof/window etc
- clutch operation
