I'm wondering as the 996 is obviously a LOT of car for the cash.

How easy is it likely to be to find a decent one? I have cash to spend but not a great deal of time to go and hunt around for the best possible example, ideally I'd like to be able to come over to the UK - look at a few and pick one up over the space of a couple of weekends. Am I completely nuts in trying to do this?

I'm looking for one as a daily driver, I have a budget aside for maintaining it, my issue is sourcing a good vehicle with all the horror stories that I've numbed myself by reading online. I've been looking into getting gone of these for years and endless interweb stories have stopped me, help me bight the bullet and go and buy one!

Are there any options/specs that I should make sure I get? I prefer the look of the 3 point steering wheel to the 4 point but otherwise. I'd prefer lower mileage purely for resale purposes.
Obviously there are lots of autos available at this price point but only a handful of manual cars, which I'd be more inclined towards.

I'd also be interested to hear other peoples experiences buying similar older Pork at this kind of money.
Any help/advice/links to specific cars advertised within a 70 mile radius of B5 (Birmingham) would be appreciated, Ta thumbup

I looked into this, lots of the 10-12k cars need work, have often been owned by people that can afford the car but not to run them properley, easy to end up with a 10-12k car that costs you another 3-4k in the next 6 months, granted you'll have a lovely 15-16k car at that point but if you want a lovely 15-16k car, go buy one and save the grief ...

I don't agree that the 10k cars have to be dogs/ not maintained / money pits.

I paid less than 9k for mine and won't even need a service or MOT for another few months. I choose to do some preventative maintenance (IMS, thermostat, coffin arms, air con) but the car is fine as it is.

The previous owner was very fastidious with it. Perhaps he couldn't sell it due to the 17" wheels (which I prefer) and the Savannah interior (which I happen to like).

I agree, but unfortunately most are tired old dogs with the odd gem in between. Might be hard work to find a gem at short notice.

Wrong wheels, naff stereo, silly headlights. All smacks of a car that's been owned by the wrong sort of chap IMO.

I paid 12.7 for a 2002 996 facelift.

I thought it was worth it for the extra 20bhp, but mainly for the extra peace of mind - the 3.6l engines were a lot less prone to IMS problems etc.

Mine is a C2 manual with 95K miles, in *perfect* condition, drives beautifully. Serviced by Portiacraft every 10K miles.

I think I got a bargain. Incidentally it has the GT3 skirt and wheels and they look very good IMO.

probably about £1k in total. I haven't done all of them even, since they are not essential, but nice to haves. Which will make the car's total cost (but that's over 6 months) to a whopping £9450.

I thought (maybe wrongly) the IMS alone is a c£1k role ...

I guess these things are different if you can do this stuff yourself ....

Sounds like a bargain you have smile

the IMS can be approached in different ways. I have a specialist near me who can do the bearing and the stud for much less than 1k (I am aware another poster here had it done to his 3.6).

If you go the LN ceramic bearing way then yes, it will be over 1k

Did you have your inspected before you bought? Do you also pay for an independent warranty on top as they look a little pricey but give (some) peace of mind

no inspection (my view is that the inspection can't show the really worrying issues - rightly or wrongly) and can't have a warranty since it's 14 years old (unless I go the Hartech way, which is a brilliant scheme but too far for me).

Is there a definitive buyers guide out there for these? Am just waiting on insurance quotes and am in the UK next weekend, I'm more than a little anxious to scratch that itch.

And most likely needs condensers - if was just a re-gas, why not done? (and a new key needed)

Jesus....are only certain people allowed to own a Porsche?

If you managed to look down your nose far enough, you'd have read that the wheels and stereo aren't included in the sale and the original bulbs are going with it, if the HIDs offend.

I think it looks alright, especially for the money.
