Does anyone know if the gearbox mount can be replaced without taking the box right off the car?!

If it does come off I'll get the clutch done at the same time but it'll cost me more and I'm feeling really poor at the mo...

The two main screws have to be removed while maintaining the gearbox, then access to the mount is possible.
If I were you I'd have this done at the clutch change, as it's too much hassle for something not so important.

You haven't tried to hoon thru MK in my car...

Changing down to 2nd on the overun causes the whole car to judder as the gearbox mount winds itself up - bit of a mare really, managed to find a good second hand mount for 25 quid plus vat as opposed to 120 plus, that and I don't have the spare wedge to get the clutch done (and it's 'only' got 58k miles on it?!)

Mind you if it does have to come out the chap who's doing it has sourced a clutch for around 180 plus the dreaded so it could be worse I guess.

If the judder is indeed because of the clutch needing replacement, replacing the gearbox mount alone will certainly not help reduce the judder when downchanging to second gear.
The only way to avoid it in the current state is to rev the engine when downchanging.

Well at last somebody else has the same problem as me...
Ive got a 944S2 + ive HAD the clutch changed the gearbox mount changed + still the "box" wants to wind itself off the car when i change from 3rd to 2nd..
Maybee its a 944 trait....?????

I have been told that my car has engine mounts from a 944 turbo which are apparently stiffer, so that could be the problem.

This is a typical S & S2 problem that might be related to the type of clutch disc.
The original rubber-centered clutch disc the cars left the factory with certainly made for extra suppleness in the transmission than the updated spring-centered cluth disc now most maintained cars have been fitted with.

We just have to live with it and give the throttle a stab when downchanging from 3rd to 2nd.

Engine mounts are the same between S2 and turbo.

Thanks for the replies.

I was under the impression that the most likely culprit is the clutch release lever or bearing, but I am keen to rule out any other (perhaps cheaper) possibilities before trying to get it fixed.

I don't think it is the clutch rubber as it was changed at 90K and again under warrenty when I bought it from cridfords (now 127K). Apart from the judder, the clutch is great.

I think I will just have to brace myself for a gearbox-out job, which could be expensive. If I get to the bottom of it I will post. Just wish I had 3 legs for smoother changes in the meantime!
