2011 997s v 991 3.4
Discussion
Hello there,
I'm new to the forum & would be grateful for some opinions. For family reasons i'm thinking of changing my Boxster rs60 for a 911. My local opc has a 2011 997s pdk-red & well specced- 59k. I can't decide if I should "push the boat out" for a new 991 3.4,which I'm sure with a few options will be 20k more expensive! Is it worth it?!

Drive them both. I'm new to the forum & would be grateful for some opinions. For family reasons i'm thinking of changing my Boxster rs60 for a 911. Also a low mileage used 991 hopefully will not be 20k more expensive.
Yep need the seats, otherwise a 981 would do me. Have driven a 3.6 997 in the past, found the direct injection engine lacking a bit of character & wasn't convinced with the pdk.
Had a short run in the 991 on smooth roads-not enough to form an opinion really. Good sound from the engine directed into the cabin though. Have to say I liked the car though not totally convinced with the blingy rear.
Not being too familiar with 911's it's harder to tell if the 991 is the better car! Personal choice I suppose. Thought perhaps the last of the 997's would be a well sorted car with alot of the depreciation over.

The 991 is quite a step up from the 997, but as you will no doubt be told, the steering doesn't have the crispness of the 997, but in every other respect I think it is a far superior car, especially with PDCC. Not sure why you think the rear is blingy unless you're referring to the badging, I had mine removed to just leave 'Porsche'.

60k 997s still going to take a big hit in depreciation I would think.
I just can't see 991 holding their money when an S is £100k. Surely that is a car that is going to lose 30k in the next 12 months....
At 100k, I'm just not interested but at 70k I could be. Wonder how long they will take to get there?.....

A 70k 991 would swing it, but i guess there's only slightly "thrashed" demos approaching that at that moment!
I would defo delete the badging though & leave it a bit cleaner.
I think once you get to 70k & above I'd probably go new & have the spec I wanted.
Thanks for the comments!

There are many 991s sitting in stock. It is a much better car than 997 and you should be able to negotiate around 10% off list depending on spec. If you want to know OPC names PM me.
The 991 3.4 will be slower / less torquey than the 997 "S" - which in Gen II form is bloody quick with PDK. I found that even thrashing the 991 3.4 to the limiter, it didn't feel that fast and it lacks the mid range shove of the 3.8's .... but coming from a Boxster you might think it's enough for you.
You pays your money and decides if you must have the newest car, but several of my friends have bought 997's like the one you're thinking of because they offered a better value proposition / more tactile driving experience.
There are plenty on here that love their 991's, but unless you can order one new, it'll be an "ex demo" that will have been thrashed by the whole dealership / piles of customers / come from the Porsche Experience Centre .....

The rules of thumb around a twisty track:
991 3.4 will clock in around the same times as a Gen 1 C2S
991 3.8 will clock in around the same times as a Gen 1 GT3 and Gen 2 Turbo.
How much of a real difference you will feel on UK roads between all these cars is debatable. The 3.4 clocks in with a slightly higher DB noise at 30-40mph due to the gearing and rev ranges.
Do you like to work the engine? Do you like to get out of 3rd gear? Do you track?

I'm still very fond of the rs60, just with the 2 seats it's not being used as much as it deserves.
I won't be on a track, the 991 3.4 felt plenty quick enough-in reality for road use it's as quick as anyone needs to be able to enjoy it at sane speeds.
The 991s is unfortunately too strong on the £ front for me. I could keep the boxster & buy a great family motor for the cost to change, but I'm feel'in the pull of the 911 too strongly!

It's a well trodden path, Porsche created the Boxster for this very purpose - to sell you a 911 when you have kids, their trade-in bid for the upgrade will reflect this, it will be solid.I won't be on a track, the 991 3.4 felt plenty quick enough-in reality for road use it's as quick as anyone needs to be able to enjoy it at sane speeds.
