Drove my 2000 2.7 boxster tonight and parked to open a gate started it to drive on and it made a small clunk sound I think and now misses like mad at idle and won't rev past 1900. Will idle at 1200 no problem but on tick over its ready to die. Any ideas ?

I've not had much to do with the boxster but just a few questions

Is it missing
Is there plenty of push out the exhaust
have you tried restarting the car
does it smell of fuel

On tick over its missing like a pig. I'd say only 3 of the 6 maybe. Give her some gas and she idles ok but won't rev above 1900 can't smell fuel just seems no power in her at all

No engine knocks or rattles. Exhaust looks black and a tiny dampness but that could be from the rain.

No smoke no rattles points away from a mechanical issue and more electronic it could be a maf sensor or timing control even a spark issue.
How mechanically minded are you

I'm no weekend mechanic lol. Just about know where the maf is and it's all a pain on the arse to get too with the boxster lol

I'm with you on it not being mechanical tho

As a rule of thumb disconnecting the Maf should go to base settings and change how it runs.
Was the car warm when the fault showed itself and is it cold now still with the fault.

Yeah drove the car about 60 miles today no problem. Stopped for 5 min then started and she was missing. Tried it again about hour after and same. Did seem easier to start though as first time took ages to start

It's a shame there such a pain to get to do the revs build if you go light on the throttle and if you snap the throttle does it bog down.

No matter what I do they won't go above 1900 and does seem slow to rev. If I put air con on it won't rev above 1600

Does the car have a battery light !! faulty battery / alternator / belt could effect the electrics which could cause the fault.
Do you have somebody to rev the car so you can tell if the exhaust is blocked the noise it made before had us the odd part

Dont know how sophisticated the ecu is on your car but my guess (and it is a guess) would be a faulty signal to the ecu. MAF sensor, fuel sender, anti knock detection fault??

Think a good indie would be your best bet.

Good luck!

Hopeople it stays that way but as said earlier it sounds electronic which can be a nightmare as it only takes a bad connection.
There is a test called the wiggle test and it is just that wiggle all connections and see if it does it.

Just had six new cool packs and they tend to throw up the engine light when fail. What ever it was didn't show any faults on the dash. I did put petrol in yesterday and wondering if there was done crap or water maybe ? I've added more fuel and done about 40 miles now. So far so good lol

Thanks to everyone who have help. Great guys
