Sigh. Why not go with the plugs Porsche recommends? I have now with my 02 Boxster I forget how many times (with nearly 258K miles the thing has seen its share of plug changes) and even my 03 Turbo with 3 plug changes under its belt (with 96K miles on its odometer) and even though a few times I have left the plugs in past their change by date or change at so many miles they performed flawlessly.

I see no reason to use my car engines as test platforms to try to find a suitable plug when that question has already been answered.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

I reckon the Champion spark plug rep in the F1 paddock has the easiest job in the World. "Are your plugs running okay?" "yes thanks" "Great, let me know if you have any problems" "Righto, see you next time". Plugs just work, end of story.

What is it you're trying to achieve that the Porsche OE recommendation can't let you?

Well, I'll tell you what Porsche parts managers tell me: If you want to know what in this case spark plug is right for your car, ask the local Porsche dealer (OPC) parts manager to look up the part number for spark plugs for your car. He'll ask for your car's VIN. Part numbers are tied to VINs.

As I have found over the years, sometimes the part # of a part or parts installed at the factory are no longer available, having been superseded by a newer part number.

Thus the plugs that came with your car from the factory may no longer be available, or perhaps no longer deemed the best plugs.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

some useful advice .Thank you.
I thought this was going to be simple, but it obviously isnt.
Ive tried four or five different suppliers , and got as many different answers.
Even from Porsche Dealers !!!!
So mabe it isnt as important as i thiught it was to have the " Right " plugs !!!

The exact plugs recommended by Porsche are Beru 14FGR-6KQU, Porsche part no. 999.170.201.90.

However has been said on the thread, if you are putting them in a std engine, I would go with what your supplier recommends.

Always run NGK in my cars & always have. Ran NGK in the 944 & surprised a few, Ray Northway for one. If I do the plug change on my Boxster then it'll be NGK BKR6EQUP, if OPC do it then it will be what they supply.

as long as you get the correct heat range, there is no benefit between any type of pulg (even surface discharge)....

My take is you got different answers from suppliers because the best/right plug is the one they have in stock. They bought a quantity of plugs to have on hand and can't return the plugs and do not want to discount it to make room for newer stock.

Different answers from different Porsche dealers suggests to me the same thing. Some dealers stock up on things like plugs and then the part number changes and they're left holding old/out of date stock. (My word is the dealer can't return this stock for a credit, let alone a refund.)

As bad as the above is, if I'm right of course, in a few cases, though one hopes not, the dealer might give you a different or conflicting answer because it simply is not keeping up with what's current.

Now, one might suppose that say plug XYZ-123 that lasted around 60K miles with no apparent detriment to engine would be safe to use again, in new form, of course.

The problem is the while the plug XYZ-123 is the same brand/number it might not be the same plug it was back years ago when Porsche installed plugs into a new engine. This then explains why Porsche changed to a different plug which resulted in a change of the plug's part number.

I really do not know what plugs are in my Boxster and Turbo engines right now. I can only provide you -- if I had the invoices handy -- the part number of the plugs installed.

Now I can tell you what plugs came out of my Boxster and Turbo, their last plug change.

In fact, I can go back 2 plug changes for the Boxster. The time before last the plug that came out of the Boxster was a 4-ground electrode Beru Ultra 336.

The last plug change the plug that came out of the Boxster was a 2-ground electrode Beru Ultra R6 219. In both cases I had the dealer (same dealer IIRC) change the plugs. In two separate plug change services separated by at least 60K miles and I do not know how much time two different plugs were used.

For the Turbo, at its last plug change the plug that came out was a 2-ground electrode Beru Ultra R6 836.

But what plugs are in the engines now? I have no idea and won't have any idea for the Boxster for another 60K miles or for the Turbo for another 24K miles (IIRC this is the plug change interval for the Turbo).

Sincerely,

Rockster.
