The car was in the OPC today to have the warranty extended when they discovered a coolant leak on an across engine pipe, the only difficulty is that it needs the engine out to fix it....

This is an 07 plate c2s with 26k on the clock, has a gentle life and spends most of its time in the garage so it just shows how you can rack up big costs on these cars....

On a positive note, it is covered by the warranty so I won't have to pay (apart from the £1k a year the warranty costs of course...)

On another note painful to the wallet, it needs 2 new rear tyres (Pirelli P Zeros, 19/295/30 I thinnk N rated) at a quoted cost of £700 the pair fitted inc VAT etc, sounds steep to me?

£700 fitted for two rears isn't terrible, but it's OTT - have a look at Camskill's website, or pop down to Costco - you'll get the, I think superior, Michelin PS2, for less money.

I got a 20% off deal at Costco and did all 4 19" rims on my Cayman for £890 fitted.

I went from PZRs to PS2s and found them much better in terms of grip and wear, but a change may mean you'll need a full new set to keep the OPC happy?

Was the car using water then?

I didn't notice it using any water, or indeed any leaks on the garage floor, although i had noticed a slightly odd smell when I put the car away, a bit like burning rubber.

It's a lesson in the value of the warranty - my a/c, that I thought needed more gas, was a leaking condenser. On EuroCarParts the condenser is £270 alone - so OPC prices, fitted, I reckon £600 at least - almost pays for the warranty when you factor in the fun to be had hooning around in a courtesy car!

.....Therein lies the problem..... all cars liked to be used....and Porsches liked to be thrashed.....only your good self is perhaps to blame......and as they say.....if you can't afford to run a Porsche.....don't try.

interesting, i had a very similar thing at my latest warranty inspection, a broken hi-pressure aircon pipe, engine and box out as its on top of the motor, 9 hours the book time apparently.

A curious conclusion you've reached there.

Curious? fking stupid IMO.

Porsches 'like to be thrashed', where the hell did that old saw ever come from?

Porsches don't 'like' or 'dislike' being thrashed any more or less than any other make and whilst a low mileage garage queen might need a different maintenance regime than a daily driver, there is no reason why one shouldn't be perfectly good and reliable.

It sounds to me like this may well be an OPC finding work, if there was no evidence of a leak before their 'inspection'.

5 YO, 26K and needing the engine out for a leaky pipe. Another poor show, Porsche. No wonder they don't provide even an industry standard warranty.

I take the last comments back, if it turns out to have been 'thrashed'. It wouldn't like that................. wink

Your guess is pretty much spot on. That's what I was quoted to fit one condenser anyway. In the end got both condensers changed + a new AC pipe and regas for £700 all in at an Indy.

I decided to try the "no waranty but keep a contingency fund" approach this time around. I thought the warranty was more like £1250 per year plus first year inspection and any initial work to get it into shape? Probably going to break even on that this year, but at least most of the typical problem stuff has been done now.

....oh dear precious...sorry to have rocked your little boat but I come from a different genration of Porsche ownership....."air-cooled" and have to say that the air-cooled engine in either a Porsche or a VW likes to be "thrashed".....now when I say "thrashed" I don't mean abusing the engine but I mean giving it good work out.....it's a bit of an old fashioned term.....and obviously you are still a nipper.....keep smiling....and yes you are fking stupid....and one could wonder if you know anything about Porsches or their history.

Bad case of ellipsis you have there. I'd put a full stop to your posting before you fall into a comma.

I don't think you know what you mean. The definition of thrashing is being hit repeatedly and violently, as a punishment. Now how can that do any good?

Unless you have some other meaning as outdated as your theories on car maintenance?

As for what I know, well I'd bet a lot that it's more than you........ wink
