Hi guys,

i've recently bought a 987 Boxster S and (after a little european road trip) it's boardering on 60k on the clock.

All is fine and i love it however occassionally if i gently ie not forcefully engage gear stick into fourth, i realease clutch and accelerate only to find the gear has not switched. I then have to reengage the clutch and yank the gear stick into fouth which is always met with a crunching sound.

All the other gears are fine and i can push the gear stick very gently for them to engage.

The car is under a 2 year warranty.

Has anyone got any ideas on this or is it common with my model (my thinking is no)?

I sometimes have problems getting into 2nd when its cold. If the warranty will cover it, get it fixed coz its going to be expensive!

It may require some adjustment to the cables. I'd have it checked out anyway.

It's usually second that does this.

About £1k for Hartech to strip down and machine some bits to sort it, Porsche will want to fit a new box.

Dunno it it's the same thing on fourth.

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water just yet, what is the overall gear shift movement like regardless of what gear you are trying to select ? Is it generally sloppy ?

it's quite straight forward to remove the centre arm rest section of trim and look at the oem shifter which sits inside two white plastic bushes, these can become worn and you need to eliminate them as the problem and it will also give the the chance to look at the two cables.

If the bushes are worn or more likely one more so than the other consider a short shift kit as the plastic bushes are held witin aluminium adjustable caps and are a lot more robust, hopefully it won't be the big problem you might think it is, I hope

I have an 05 987 and sometimes have a similar issue, I.e. I sometimes miss 4th gear, I think it's down to me being lazy with the clutch and not depressing it formlong enough for the shifte to fully engage in 4th. It doesn't happen in any other gear so I think 4th maybe a slightly longer throw than 2nd or 6th.

It happened again once over a 500 mile drive this weekend....it's nice to know another owner is experiencing it....seeing as the car is still under warranty i am going to take it into Porsche and see what they say.

It's good to have the info above though, thanks guys.
