I've heard that GT3s get noisier with age which can cause bad surprises on track days. Is it the silencer or the Cats that go and how long should they last? Is it a function of age or mileage?

Cheers

I have not heard of this before, however I would take an educated guess that with age / driving cycles the cats may crack and degrade as will the baffles in the silencers.

At 92K miles, mine's still on it's original exhaust bar the cats that had melted into little bits by 50K miles. I was still passing (just!) on 105dB days and 100dB @ 4,500rpm at Castle Combe with the cats in this condition. With new cats, I was 2-3dB quieter for a few ,000 miles but it didn't last. The car has done 112 trackdays & never failed a noise test yet.

I have recently had this problem and discovered one of the cats had begun breaking up. My car is a 996mk2 which has done 48k with standard exhaust and cats. I managed to score 108db at Snetterton (see seperate thread) prior to replacement, and recorded 103db at Castle Combe following the replacement of cats.

If you know anyone with a see snake or similar inspection camera/endoscope, it may be worth probing inside the cat either by inspection hole or lambda sensor hole if you can get the lambda undone. The 'partical filter' part of the cat had detached from the outer case and was rattling round inside on one of mine.

Hmm... PDK, Electric steering... GT3 becomes GTR; a devastatingly fast all out attack weapon devoid of feel and connection is my prediction.

Hope i'm wrong.
