Just a quick question concerning a small issue on my dad’s 2001 Boxster S.

We’ve noticed that sometimes when we unlock/lock the car beeping noise like the horn (but not the horn) is made, and was wondering where that came from and why.

Another thing that has happened (twice) was when I went to unlock the car it seems the batteries in the remote are dead and the car won’t unlock on the remote So I used the key in the lock and the car behaved itself after and worked on the remote.

However the above issue happened once again this morning to my dad. The car wouldn’t unlock on the remote leaving him to use the key in the lock. The non-horn beep happened, but then the alarm went off. The car started fine, and again was absolutely normal after.

I reckon that either the batteries are on their way out in the key, or, maybe of the boot lids at the front and back are open. But I always check they are firmly closed.

So, anyone know this problem, is it a popular one with 986’s? Sorry to ask, it’s the first minor issue we’ve had since getting this car.

Many thanks in advance

Phil

Hi Phil,

There may be a couple of things causing the beep (Like the horn, but not). I would suggest it is the horn making the noise, but it's just very quick small beep which makes you think it might be something else, although happy to be corrected. This could be anything from a boot lid, engine bay lid, glove box, centre console box etc not being closed properly or indeed the microswitch being broken and so not registering as being closed. Another alternative is if you have stiff door handles and one of them doesn't ping all the way back after opening the car, this can cause the car to think the door is not closed properly and beeping to signify that.

I would also suggest that the issues regarding your key fob might be down to leaving the car for over a week, the car will go into sleep mode if not used for some time and will need to be woken up by putting the key in the lock and then unlock and lock the car, the key fob should then work which you should use to unlock the car again before starting it. If you just unlock by the door you will have I think around 30secs to start the car otherwise the alarm will go off, but can be stopped by starting the car.

I hope this information helps you.

Anlther point that may be relevant is that some aspects such as length of time before entering sleep mode can be reprogrammed by an OPC, so the 1 week sleep might be less if someone has changed it prior to you getting the car.

Sounds to me like one of the alarm sensors is failing.

I've read elsewhere that the horn "sounds" when a sensor is detected as faulty......
Always worth checking

Good luck.

Centre console lid isn't properly shut and the remote key switches off after 5 days by design.

Thanks very much chaps for the advice - will investigate a bit further as to what's happening. The car is due a service in September and will hopefully be taking it down to OPC Tonbridge smile

And whist I've got this thread running, any excuse for posting a piccy wink

Sorry to bump this folks, just another small thing. When listening to the radio/CD the sound only seems to come out the two speakers mounted on the top of the dash, and not out of the ones on the doors. Having looked up how to adjust this the door speakers still don't work. Is this another common problem on Boxsters? Is it a DIY fix it job - or do we need to take into someone who knows what they're doing?

Are you sure you have the optional (and utter crap) Porsche sound package? Standard fit was the utter utter crap speakers in the dash only.
Lucky people specced the slightly crap Bose for £800+"

Not too sure, will have to check original invoice. I know for certain they aren't Bose. if it, we're e ones othe door duds then just there to look good?

Edit: checked invoice for car - said 490: sound system. Does that mean anything?

Sorry to bump again, would rather keep this thread going rather than start another.

Something I've noticed that's very strange with the car is that sometimes when you unlock it the windows wing themselves down. Some days it may be an inch or so, and other times half way down! I ask as this happened this morning when I went out to the car and wound whether it was a common problem, and if so, how is this fixed?

The car has two horns. The small high pitch horn is a warning that something is not closed properly. Mine was the centre consul micro switch at fault. The small horn is near the battery under the bonnet, when we bought the car it was disconnected.

Yep my 99 boxster did that and it was the roof micro switch. A piece of folded card will stop this from happening if this is the case a new switch was under 30£
The card goes in the hole for the roof hook when closing. Mine when it started displaying these faults then refused to close the windows.
