Please help me work it out, google is pointless with cars so thought i would post on here for help!!
Much Appreciated,

Chris, you could start with the classifieds the cars really do look quite different
993
There is no GT3, but there is an RS which follows the priciple of tighter and lighter but with marginally raisedsimilar power output, though a 3.8 300 hp engine also exists
GT2 is an ultra rare turbo charged car with odd bolt on wings, you'll see what I mean if you get a picture. Its a very striking looking car
996
GT3 is a significantly more powerful car which is much more focused than the normal C2 in terms of weight and set up, and no clever electronics. A mark1 mark2 and mark2 RS exist. The RS cars are all white with red or blue decals
GT2 has the same engine as the turbo car, but more powerful turbos and with a tighter suspension set up. No electronic aids
997
Similar arrangment to the 996s, but not exactly the same. A rather special 4.0l version of the GT3 exists. There are electronic aids in place this time.

..Simple, the GT2 will be half way up a tree or in a hedge, with the pilot on the side of the road with his head in his hands wondering what happened, whereas the GT3 will be about 50 yards behind it, and scratching his head as he had about 2 seconds longer to figure it out as he went in, but he sounded much better while doing it ..

Nothing wrong with wanting to learn more about these cars, which is partly what forums are for after all. There have been a huge number of 911s over the years so it's not unusual to find the model lineup confusing when you first come across it.
As some others have said, I found the Wikipedia pages a very good place to start. They show you how the models have evolved over the years, with pictures and some history.
There is also an excellent issue of Total 911 (number 86 I think) which ran through all of the generations with pictures etc. Can grab a copy on iPad if you're into that kinda thing.
Enjoy
