Folks - was driving home tonight in normal traffic. Heard a large bang from the gearbox. Gear linkage like porridge, but all four forward gears selectable. Managed to get home ok. Reverse very hard to select. Is this symptomatic of failed clutch, or something else?

Err, you havea 944 with only 4 forward gears?!

Anyway, sounds more like a gearbox mount failing to me - would result in a sudden bang and then the lever would be wobbly because the box is no longer held in position and would hence be moving around when you move the lever. I'd get it checked ASAP - if it is that then whatever else holds the box in is now under more strain.

Could be the original rubber donut in the clutch thats failed if it's still the original in the car, the replacement part doesn't have this now.
