04 Cayenne - Cardan Shaft failure - suggestions?

Had a lovely conversation with my garage chappie today - confirmed Cardan shaft failure 
Hoped to get away with just the centre bearing but no joy.
Recon is £350, shiny is £750. Before I decide which, any suggestions on breakers etc?
PS How easy is it to trace a leak in the windscreen washers? Getting some through, but not very much.

Bearing in prop takes a pounding - just replace shaft with new - cush drive at front end is replaced also; worth doing.
Don't leave washers too long - any leaks from rear washer usually find their way into the electrics........
If the pressure is low just check the pump pick-up - sediment in the tank can block it; PITA to get to though........
