i am thinking of going for the day, but don't want a wasted journey..

No - it's not. Their website has a calendar, you're looking for Tourist Days (Touristen Fahrt) - sometimes just the evenings, and may be cancelled when you arrive if there's been a big smash...

Would love to try it myself - but I'm getting married 4 weeks tomorrow, and it's been ruinously expensive, so no trips anywhere for a while for me...
