I bought some 18" wheels to replace the 16" that look way too small on my 2.7 Boxster. On the basis it is a 2.7 and a tiptronic I don't need tyres that will grip like glue, but do want to get some decent ones as they are the only thing keeping my car in contact with the road

Looking so far options seem to be

Continental Sport Contact 3
Michelin pilot Sport PS2 N4

The Michelin looks pretty expensive, the continental isn't much cheaper so any tips where to look either on line or in the Woking area would be much appreciated

Thanks

Take a look at camskill. The conti's are much cheaper than Michelin.

As above, the Michelins are the far superior of the two. Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics are also very good and quite a bit less than PS2's.

If you're in Woking try Martins Tyres or go to the directory in the Thames Valley section.

Default choice is Michelin PS. However, if you are open minded consider the Falken FK452 . I've used both on a 986s on road and track and the Falken works well.

Thanks for the suggestions of tyres and Martins. I bought a couple of tyres for my M3 there about 5 years ago, good experience and the price was competitive.

to sunday-driver, joe-blogs on the road + tesco's . . . I dont think it really matters - just buy a known brand that you can afford.

To you and me - they are all the same, unless of course you are tracking/racing!!!

I went with PS2 N4s on my Boxster S. Got them from Event Tyres and total cost including fitting was just over 800 quid. I've not pushed them really hard yet, but I canvassed a number of Porsche-driving folks whose opinions I trust before buying, and they all recommended the PS2s over P Zeros, Eagle F1s etc.

If you're not wanting the ultimate response - the Pirelli PZero Rosso is a nice comfortable tyre, but I think the Continental Sport Contact 3 is quite a lot cheaper than the Michelin PS2's (which are my favourites in terms of outright grip and ride quality), but they still offer a great all round capability. Just avoid the Bridgestone RE050's which have sidewalls of concrete and are great for the track, but lousy on the road!

Interesting comment re the RE050's. I've got them in 19" on our 997 and find the ride quality really good considering the low profiles frt and rr...

You only realise when you swap to something else ... I've had RE050's on various BMW's, but recently I swapped all 4 RE050's on my 997 for a new set of MPS2's and they're a revelation, taking the worst of the edges off those transverse ridges / potholes. Much less "banging and crashing" IMHO! biggrin

PS2's are also quieter than Bridgestones.

Interesting comments Mark and Trev. I don't find the 997/19" combo any worse than our old 986/18" car - which was run on PS2's then Falken FK452. Of course both cars are luxurious compared to our old BMW 330ci sport which had all the comfort of a hard-tail chopper!
