Porsche battery charger

Hi

I have tried to look on the forum but the search does not seem to be working correctly.

The battery went on my Cayman recently probably due to a lack of constant use so I am looking to buy a charger which connects via the cigarette lighter, can anyone recommend a suitable charger that they use and where is the best place online to order one.

I have always used ctek Battery conditioners. I currently have an xs3600 which seems to work well

MXS3.6 is the newer version - bought mine on eBay and then the cigarette lighter lead from Amazon for a grand total of £50ish.

I use a optimate 6 (but the optimate 2 is ok). it's expensive at around £85 but does recover dead batteries and charges gel batteries.

The optimate 3+ will also recover a battery and the optimate 5 will provide analysis and pick the right charging programme. These are cheaper as well

Also an adapter can be used for the lighter, but if the battery is dead it's best to disconnect and charge. According the instructions the charger can then select programme that boosts upto 22v with the current limited to 0.4a to recover badly neglected batteries.

You can pick one up from Lidl or Aldi for £12/£14 which work just as good. Depends when they have them on offer though.

The larger of the Porsche ones is a re-badged CTEK 3600 (which is now a superceded model).

Another vote for ctek. A 3.6 or 5 will be more than enough for any Porsche except the cayenne. Had a msx 5 model for a year and works superbly. CTEK make chargers for Bentley and Aston Martin too

have a ctek too on my cayman.. had to connect to the battery directly instead of the lighter adaptor though.. connection doesn't look to be great using the adaptor and the ctek lights keep blinking.. no such issues when i connect direct to the battery

A question on chargers, mine is one of the Lidl ones and has crocodile clips, can I wire in a cigarette lighter type plug and use this instead. It s for a 2008 GT3.

When I bought my "S" new in March 2001 and knowing it would not be a daily driver I paid about £65 for the Porsche one that connects straight into the cigar lighter socket. 11 years and nearly 4 months on, still on original battery. That little black box must be doing a pretty good job!!

I have the official Porsche one from Porscheshop.co.uk
It is great as I don't use the Boxster for months at a time when I am offshore. Wish I had bought it years ago - would have saved hundreds in batteries. It plugs straight into the cig lighter and has a huge cord (around 6 meters).

If your cigarette lighter works when the ignition key is removed, your charger will work.

I assume that as these cars no longer have lighters then you can plug it in in the glove box socket where you are plugging your iPhone in as it must be the same?

Friend has just got a Cayman and a CTEK and instructions talk about cigarette lighters only so he thought it was best to double check before he plugged it in.
