Im trying to determine why my car is swaying fromm side to side and have done all the suspension checks, bushes drop links etc etc some one has suggested its the pu supports. Being a bit of a dullard I have not heard of this can anyone explain in english what this does and if its a big job to repair thankyou in advance Neil

at the rear of the car the PU (or bumper cover - so called PU or polyurethane IIRC) is mounted with 4 supports which generally last half a dozen or so years before they corrode

I've never heard of their corroding away causing the car to sway but it's worth checking

I did them on my 993 c2 many years back, can't remember the exact cost but I think it was £150 for all four - easy to fit if you know which end of a hammer to hold

I mean hitting a small bump sends rear from side to side, its getting to a point where i dont want to drive it its had new bushes track rod ends etc etc some one mentiones pu supports but as far as i can tell they hold the bumper on should not affect handling

Your bumper hangers being shagged wont make the car twitchy.... It may look odd from the rear but the PU doesn't weigh enough to cause that kind of movement, and if it was that loose it'd be obvious by giving it a nudge.

Sounds like something else is very wrong... How old are the tyres ? ( going through process of illiminiation)

Sadly you need to check absolutely everything

Front tie rods
Front steering arm ball joints
Front lower A arm inner bushes
All rear arm bushes and balljoints (18 at the rear)
Top mount bearings and rubber front and rear
Geometry
Tyre pressures and tyre condition/make
All ARB droplink ball joints and ARB bracket bushes

Check and replace all rear arm bushes and ball joints as necessary. This will cure your problem.

Over bumps especially? My monies on shot rear damper(s) and/or damper mounts. I'd def check for a leaking damper.

No way can I see the PU supports having anything to do with it. ....

When the suspension gets tired on 993s they can turn into a clown car. I had a 4S with worn out front shocks and control arms. It was absolutely horrible. I once changed lane on the M40 without moving the wheel - just hit a bump. If pressing on over bumpy ground the front end would bobble about in the most comical fashion.

Get it to a good specialist and do all the stuff they say needs doing. It will transform the car
