Boxster 986 intermittent roof problem?

I seem to have an intermittent fault with my electric roof any ideas?

It has always worked fine then last week my drivers window regulator went & the roof wouldn't work even when window pushed down but when I picked the car up after getting window fixed all was fine.

Today roof wouldn't open all day then tonight has opened fine?

Any ideas?

Take out the double relay and replace it, worked for me. Relays above the fuses. Best to do while kneeling on the floor.

If not try roof sensor, or handbrake sensor. Waggle both.

Check your handbrake warning light comes on when applied. Do this a few times to be sure its working. If its not than it will probably be new handbrake swith. Other than that, the relay is more likely but the microswitch in the interior light can be sensitive.

Tried all above but not working again today! Handbrake light comes on no problem & windows drop when clasp opened but roof won't open. Seems too much of a coincidence for it not to be related to the drivers door window issue as that's when it cropped up is there a switch in the door?

Where are the sensors? I've tried wiggling handbrake & opening & closing clasp?

Worked fine again all day yesterday ?

Where is the micro switch for the handbrake ? Is it easy to get to?

Handbrake light comes on the dash is that the same sensor?

HI - I am having exactly the same issue. What was the final answer? My '98 Boxster window regulator broke the day on the same that the roof didn't work for the first time. The WR has now been fixed, but the roof didn't work right away. Then it did two hours later, perfectly! Seems to have a mind of it's own.

When it doesn't work, the roof button seems completely unresponsive. Is there any chance this could happen with the roof down? Without a garage or cover, that could potentially ruin everything!

There a few simple checks you can do:
- does the handbrake light come on, roof only works when the handbrake is on
- do the windows drop when you unlatch the roof, if no dodgy microswitch probably in latch mechanism
- is the roof relay pressed home fully, check above the fuse panel
- have you put the roof in service mode/half way to check for any snapped rods or obstruction

As others have said most likely to be a microswitch. When I had mine it'd had a few replaced over the years. I think it'd had 2 handbrake switches in its life.

The hood wont work without the handbrake applying. Check the microswitch on the handbrake to ensure that this is triggering.
