Hi all,

Had an unfortunate incident yesterday as a big deer jumped straight out into our path. Deer died on impact thankfully and no one hurt, but the 964 is in a bit of a state cosmetically. Front passenger side wing is damaged, plus bonnet creased and bumper / lights mangled. I guess it's the best corner to get hit in a Porsche, but my question is around what to do for respray. I have heard Guards Red is a difficult colour to match so would you recommend getting the whole thing redone? I'll obviously document the entire repair with photos for the file, but is there anything else I should consider / make sure is done? Any thoughts gratefully received! Bit gutted as it was completely original prior to this...

Cheers

I can tell you where it is if you fancy honing your butchering skills! Was quite a big beastie. Dragging it into the hedge has put me off venison for a while...

There's a very active 964 section on the PCGB website so it may be worth asking on there too but given the original paint will now be 20 years old I imagine a colour match will be very hard to do and so a full respray makes sense. I assume you are in negotiations with your insurers although presumably the cost of a full bare metal resprary would mean they will write it off, which you probably wont want? I hate to say it but unless it is an RS you might be better off starting again....

You have all my sympathies. I hit a deer on the A82 once heading up to Inverary. Fortunately i was in a little Avis hire car at the time.

It's guards red, not an unusual metallic, any decent bodyshop should get a perfect match.

No reason for a full respray, unless you want to go that way of course

OP you have my sympathies, it wont be the easiiest to match but it is acheivable, my friend had a gaurds red 964 of a similar vintage and the bodyshop he used, although not cheap were able to match it and bllend it through so its definitely do able.

As for the quote above, what a load of elitist twoddle, its a minor dent, granted its the OP's lovely 964 but lets not get carried away !!!

Thanks for the comments. Luckily 1 year old boy was in the front, not 4 year old daughter who would never have forgiven me for killing Bambi...

Anyway it's down with RPM Technik where I bought it from at the moment so will chat to their bodyshop contacts when the time comes (they outsource the paint to another firm). Insurance co on the case.

If I do a full respray do you have to go down to bare metal or can you just effectively put another coat on top? I guess I'll find out, but good to hear from anyone that has considered this.

Massive PITA but I love that car so will be keeping it regardless - can't see it as a write off, but I guess you never know!!

Guards red should be an easy colour match as it is not even metallic.

I suspect the issue is not so much matching guards, but how much the original paint on the car has changed since the paint was original? That might be why some body shops say it is difficult to match.

A worthwhile check would be to remove the windscreen and check for rust. Dont worry about the paint, it's a simple enough job for a competent shop.

So what you are saying is that Guard's red is difficult to match?? Lol. confused

Any car that has weathered/faded paint (to a degree) requires careful matching. Reds, particularly older reds, are difficult, as you stated, ultimately, in your post!

Umm, I guess so hehe what I meant was the paint 'as new' should be pretty simple in response to the comment above about not being a metallic etc. but to match a 'faded' guards car is likely to be the issue. smile

I don't my stuff properly on this but I think techniques have changed somewhat since that car was new - I think it will have been painted with a solvent-based paint and not lacquered, whereas now it would be water-based with a clearcoat lacquer over the top. If you're keeping the car really long term then the different finishes, which may look a good match when it's first done, may age differently, thereby showing up which part(s) of the car was/were re-painted.

Careful how you deal with the insurance element too - if for example they find there's rust around the screen beforehand which is rectified as a result of the repair they may try and sting you for betterment.

Surely that would be written off if they have to spray >50% of the car?

I can't see the economics of that. The car's worth £20k, a bumper is £800, wing probably similar, plus lights etc so you've probably got £2k of parts and perhaps half a dozen hours (book time likely less than that) and paint & materials.

I did very similar damage to my 964 when a stack of tyres at the Croft chicane, err, jumped out in front of me (couldn't possibly have been just me being an idiot and mis-judging whilst going full pelt whistle ). 6 days and £650 later it was fixed (used parts) and painted and out competing again.

Ok, I didn't realise the car was worth £20k, I thought it was less than that.

Thanks goose was panicking with all this talk of write offs! Couldn't see how it could be enough damage to do that. I think I will at least look at a full respray as I bought the car with the intention of keeping it long term so may have done this at some point in the future anyway

Cheers
