We have been testing for quite some time now different intercooler solutions for a number of power ranges. That has included different aftermarket intercoolers as well as GT2 coolers etc.

In summary, any of the above cars in the subject would benefit considerably from fitting the Porsche GT2RS intercoolers.

For higher hp turbos (over 650hp+) they become too restrictive in terms of flow versus cooling. You then need 5 x 14 inch high flow coolers.

We have seen a minimum 10c drop in intake temps compared with other intercoolers. The signifcance is that this means that ignition is not adjusted as quickly, so you retain power for longer, hence the car is quicker, especially for speeds over 120mph.

For the cost this is a no brainer and cannot recommend these highly enough.

They are the x50/gt2 intercoolers. Better than the 996 turbo car, but still very poor. When we tune cars to say 1 to 1.1 bar, on standard intercoolers starting at 20c IAT, we typically see 45c by 130mph. These GT2RS intercoolers go no where near that.

We even fitted them as a test to our k1639 car which runs 1.5 bar and 620-650hp. Even then it was reducing temps by 10c across the rev range. On our full version k1639 which makes near to 700hp we don't use them - we use 5 x 14 inch coolers because they become a restriction in terms of air flow.

Think of it this way, the turbo flows to the intercooler and then through to the throttle body/plenum into the manifold. Just because an intercooler is great at cooling, does not necessarily make it the right intercooler for your car - great cooling comes at the expensive of air flow. This is what we have been looking at. If the air flow/volume is too great, then it will choke the turbo so that the turbine runs slower.

An intercooler could be good for one set up but poor for another set up. You have to look at the turbos you are running (hybrids etc) and see what is best, but imo, anything under 650hp would be good with the gt2rs intercoolers.

And for the price installed as said it is a no brainer.

Is there a big difference in cost between the GT2RS IC's and the 5 x 14 inch coolers you use

Yes around £2k extra, but like I said you don't need these until you have high hp.

Okay, so with my stage 1 remap and Europipes that I already have, would the GT2RS IC's give me any more BHP and if how much?

The GT2RS IC's appear to be fairly low cost, Approximately how many hours to fit them

To be clear - it stops you losing power which you will be at certain IATs, not increases it. I suppose you could say it increases it if you like but I prefer the fact that it retains the power you have or should have.

You don't lose any power until IATs are at 37c, the first correction is made (minor correction) but you lose power especially after 50c, 55c, 60c etc.

And it won't correct a poor map of course.

Fitting time really depends but we can do this in 4 hours now.

Remember in warmer weather where ambient temp is higher to start with (that's if we ever get any warmer weather in this country banghead) you will be losing power quicker because you will be hitting the trigger points quicker.

Absolutely a good mod for your set up.

Sounds perfect!

Out of interest, have the cost of getting my car up to around the 650 bhp come down at all?

Probably the other way because we have revised the package components. Just give me a shout.

I have to say I don't know how they are doing it at that price - not convinced personally since we are buying direct to manufacturer and cannot get that cheap.

You can chose how to fit them but you need to make mods to the shrouds and also there are hose implications.

Word of caution - the end tanks are only plastic so you need to take care to ensure they won't come apart - really depends on what turbos and pressure you plan to run but that can be overcome.

I can't for the life of me think why a British company like pro alloy Motorsport don't make alloy coolers and rads/ condensers for 996/997 tt's. They would sell loads, especially the rads, and they would last indefinitely. And TBH they are usually no more than OE price.

I've often thought that too, easy business opportunity for someone who has the time (or inclination).
