What's the legal requirement on providing a name on the log book when you buy a car. IE can the car be owned by someone without being immediately registered in their name??

I believe so, yes but people use log book as ownership record.

Someone tell me otherwise, but I always seemed to think that the registered keeper is not necessarily the legal owner, however cannot be a minor under the age of 18 or someone that lives outside the UK. So for example, a car can be registered in one person's name but the legal title belongs to another (such as a finance company). smile

Yeah that sounds familiar however I meant if I bought a car and wanted time to decide who I was going to give/sell it to how much grace do I get from the DVLA till it has to be registered in someone's name?

Tks yes looks like the obligation is on the seller so they will be notified immediately. Wonder how dealers get round that then.

When I sold my GTS to an OPC I filled in the yellow 'Trade Section' of the V5C so that the DVLA knew that they had it. When they then sold it on I assume the new (very lucky) owner had their details enter and sent off.

I don't suppose I'd get away with that then. It's just I may not know where the car is going for the first month so don't wanna add the wrong/additional name
