Hi all,
I'm currently looking to get a new car and I can't decide between a 981S and 991S?
After months of looking around I finally decided to go with the 991S cabriolet with PDK, PDCC, and Sports Chrono (over the R8 in case you were interested).
But at the last minute I've been seduced by all the glowing reviews for the 981S, and a fully loaded spec is still around £40k cheaper.
I've got a second, much more practical car, so the slightly less practical 981 is not really an issue for me.
I'll be using the car as a daily driver, doing over 2 hours a day.
So I guess my question is: Is the 991 really £40k better? This will be my first Porsche.
Any suggestions or thoughts greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

£40k is the charge for the rear child seats, only you can decide if you need them.I'm currently looking to get a new car and I can't decide between a 981S and 991S?

Drop a large deposit and spend half a day at Porsche Silverstone trying them out.
Ps. Car magazine have put an R8 cab vs 991 cab video review teaser here (you have to buy the mag):

if its your first Porsche you have to get the 911 if you can afford it, you get this special little feeling driving a (any) 911 that i doubt comes with a boxster, if your get the box you'll always still want the 911
i on the other hand have got a 911 have have no quarms about potentially moving into a 981... all depends on the costs

If you are open to both, then the only way is drive both and see which you prefer and then which gives greater satisfaction to look at.
The 981 for me is the more appealing product (barring future gt3/turbo models).
I like the look of the 991, but I don't lust to own it. For me the 981 would be more rewarding to own.
40k is a lot of money to enjoy on other things. Or gives freedom to pick nice options like going the whole hog and doing factory collect and enjoy a week driving back.
Still laugh at people who believe those driving around in a boxster are always looking at 911 in a jealous fashion! Driven a 997S and let's just say, I didn't suddenly crave or believe I needed to own one afterwards. Nice car, not knocking it, but my boxster spyder drove much nicer, is more fun and looks better.... in my opinion.

IMO this just comes down to money - if you can just as easily afford the 991 then go with that. If money is an issue go for the Boxster. They're both designed to be best in their class so decide your budget and go with what you can afford. Nothing wrong with either car they're both great in my view and will both be a nice place to be for 2 hours a day, but unless you have other specific requirements around what the car needs to do, go with the 991. That's what I would do if money wasn't an issue. The 911 is a legend, the Boxster isn't (... yet).
Based on what you have said, I would go for the Boxster. To my eyes, it is the first really good looking Boxster and the first I would be happy to own over its contemporary 911.
As it seems you are in the position of being able to afford the 911 anyway, you have nothing to prove. Unless of course you have something to prove.

I've had 2 Boxsters in the past - both bought when I could have purchased a 911. I never felt I wished I'd gone 911 as the Boxster was such a rewarding drive and a great ownership proposition (mine was a daily driver).
Back in the same position again now. Test drove the 991 S a month or so ago and loved it but am trying the Boxster S soon. Assuming the Boxster feels right (which I have no doubt it will) I will be going that way and getting something very highly specced for still less money than the 991.
The new Boxster looks so damn good now as well.
