What's too high a milage for a 996/997
Discussion
I'm interested to know what milage will then begin to put off buyers in the market for a 996/997?
I was tempted by a 997 C2s chrono recently @ 18k butnit had done 140k miles by one owner from new! Car has had an engine replacement just over a year ago under warranty from Porsche. I'm tempted but worried about resale potential?
What's your thoughts ? Milage doesn't bother me too much so long as the car has dealer history but I've never owned a Porsche before so not sure...

Look at it this way mate. Your looking to buy it ain't you? Well no doubt come resale there will be another dude with the same possible question as yourself, then go ahead and buy it from you. There is always buyers out there if the price is right.
Its whether you think it's a good enough buy at that price. If its been fully serviced, and with a new engine, suppose it will be a sound car, as its bound to have had a shed load of replacements in that mileage!
If it checks out fine, drives ok, and after you've haggled on a lower price off course, then why not?
I am sure someone will be on soon with some advice to what they are worth with that kind of mileage.

Goodness ... I've had my 996 turbo from new in June 2004. Just done 18,000 miles ... yes, eighteen thousand, & still got a Porsche dealer warranty.
Under 2,000 miles a year in such a capable everyday car is a bit of a shame. I wouldn't think the warranty cover you've had, at getting on for £6,000 will have been good value either over such few miles. The 140k car sounds like great value with new engine etc.

Depends how it was used, but there was a thread last year about a 996 GT3 that was untracked with them which sold having done 180000 miles. The new owner did need to replace the pads (it still had supposedly the original ones in it). Conversely, the record for a track car destroying a set was to my knowledge a GT2 that ate them within 4 track days...If you look at it the other way around, a low-mileage car says to me that it isn't that exciting/enjoyable/easy to drive and that's why it is left unloved in the garage
Whereas one that has huge mileage shows that it is a solid, reliable, fun, engaging and exciting to drive car and begs to be driven on any and all occasions, even for a brief run to Tescos to get some bread and milk even when there is a perfectly easy to drive 5 Series sat on the drive next to it yesterday morning....

Was it a black one... I enquired about one with 130K and new engine last August.... advertised as "ONE OWNER FROM NEW", only to find that the person selling it has "owned" it for only 2 months, but didn't registered in his name as he "wasn't sure about keeping it or selling it". Apparently it was bought for him by his brother, through the trade, as a p/ex and form not sent back to DVLA!
No its the Ruby red one as posted earlier, I've never been scared of high mileage cars (I currently own a 145k Range Rover 35th Anniversary and its never missed a beat in daily usage)but i dont know if maybe a specialist vehicle like a C2s would be a harder sell with high miles.
With 50k mile variants being listed on the Trader for little over 20k is even 18k too much for this car? Owner tells me he can break the car up and sell off the parts for more? So make of that what you will.
I am tempted but dont want to be left with a free falling depreciating time bomb stuck up my a**e.

yeh i found it strange too saying that...he said hes done a few before basically because the car value was less that its worth in parts.
He said 18k was is bottom price on the car I value it more about the 16-17k mark.
I actually love the colour (i hate boring black/silver variants) its the same as my range rover but i do understand this will also effect residuals but ive not seen too many 997's advertised in this colour which may make it more appealing?
Think i may pass on this one though...

I think £18k is a bit steep with that mileage, but it wouldn't put me off it it came at the right price. I love the colour and the spec seems pretty good if the history checks out. Quite tempted myself!
To do 140k in 7 years, a large proportion of that must have been motorway mileage and anyway it's had a new engine! Sticking a few more on over the next couple of years won't make a huge difference, you'll still sell it again if the price is right.
I have a 996 which has 84k up on an 03 plate and in the 2 years I've had it the main costs have just been consumables (tyres & discs) that's not to say the engine won't go bang next week, but if I'd believed all the scare stories I'd never have bought it in the first place...
