Hi, I have read through the forum to see if anyone else has the same or similar problem but as yet I am at a loss and so is my local OPC. Above is the address for the video of the chirping noise and apologies for the erratic videoing. This chirping noise has been going on for months as it was initially suggested by my OPC that it sounded like a pulley on the water pump. Today it went in to the OPC for what was supposed to be a water pump replacement but alas they confirmed this wasn't the problem and they were at a loss to diagnose what other than it was coming from the left bank side of the engine. They ruled out IMS, AOS and Serpentine and suggested that until they got inside the engine and even then no guarantees, would they no what the problem is but so far its a head scratcher.

I should note that the noise stops on long runs when the engine is really up to temp and there are no diagnostic issues, it doesn't use much oil and touch wood, runs sweetly.

Any help suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
D

I couldn't get your link to work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=575JKEOZBNc
A loose spark plug sounds plausible.

Thanks for the advice and can't believe it could be something as daft as a spark plug. I will be on to the OPC to check this and let you know. As for the link, just tried and seems to work

Your link includes the final dot, which results in a 404.

I also spoke with Barry Hart from Hartech who agreed it could be the spark plug but if not, to also consider the exhaust.

Given the volume, pitch and clarity of the sound it's not inside the engine. So what else has a frequency of crank speed (or possibly half crank speed?):
Spark plug
Pulley (not the belt though cos frequency too high). There can't be more than 3 external pulleys can there?

Can't think I anything else, but it's a short list...

Almost certainly a loose plug. It is surprisingly common.

Thanks for all the advice, the car is booked in so fingers crossed it is just a loose spark plug. I will let you know.

Well the problem was indeed a loose spark plug - problem solved. I took the car to Bristol's main Indy, Advanced Car Care and as usual Pete and Jake were extremely helpful - top boys. They confirmed the loose spark plug and said this wasn't uncommon and should have been picked up easily by the OPC. They then checked the others and charged me a paltry tenner - fantastic.

My thanks to the great advice received on PH and the guys at ACC. The OPC said the noise was definitely coming from the engine and wanted to start an exploratory by first removing the Cam covers. They offered no guarantees just a huge labour bill for the privilege. This is the second time the OPC has tried to fleece me and IMO another nail in their coffin.

Disgusting. I take it this is a *local* OPC to your area (rhymes with Crystal?)

Get onto PGB asap and let them know. I would.

+1 to Phooey's remarks. A trained team of specialists couldn't diagnose what a couple of PH'ers managed to do via YouTube? Pretty worrying.

Still, glad it's sorted.

Just received this response from porsche and about what i have come to expect from them - nothing.

Good afternoon Mr B***

I apologise we have not been able to speak, our calls seem to have missed
each other.

Thank you for your kind comments in relation to O***** A*****. I have
passed them onto both him and his manager.

Whilst I acknowledge your disappointment and frustration that, during your
visit to Porsche Centre X, they did not diagnose the issue with your
car. I have spoken with the Centre and confirm they did not have the
opportunity to investigate further.

Due to the constraints of the AA warranty you have on the vehicle, Porsche
Centre X were unable to continue their investigations and be paid for
their time spent. O***** confirmed, in order to continue to investigate
the noise further, they would require 3 hours labour time. The 3 hours
labour time requested, in order to further investigate the fault, is a
reasonable time period that would allow the technician to properly
investigate the root cause of the complaint. It would be inappropriate of
a Porsche Centre to request only 1 hour labour and find no faults, which
would then lead to ask for your further authorisation for additional
labour, than it would to require 3 from the onset and only use a proportion
of it in order to find and diagnose the problem. Porsche Centre X
are confident that should they have been given authority to continue
investigations, they would have confirmed the issue to arise from an
ill-fitted spark plug and confirmed the issue to you without delay. That
said, whilst I know you had removed the vehicle from Porsche Centre X
to take it to an independent, I am pleased that the issue has been
resolved.

Reference the charge made for the use of the loan vehicle. Porsche Centre
X confirm that this forms a part of their business policy that they
charge 15 pence per mile for the use of their loan vehicles. I appreciate
that this value may have appeared very small, however, this is the business
practice of Porsche Centre X and is adhered to strictly regardless of
the mileage.

Clearly, it is disappointing to receive feedback such that you are
disgusted with Porsche. In addition, it is disappointing you believe
Porsche would operate in a way that would charge you for work which would
not be required.

I apologise you believe their service has fallen short of your expectation
and your comments have been passed to the team at Porsche Centre X.

Kind regards
