RS flywheel - good thing / bad thing ?
Discussion
Hello all,
My recently purchased 993 C2 is fitted with an RS solid flywheel; the previous owner couldn't say enough good things about it during the test drive. (btw, i previously had a 964 with the heavier DMF flywheel).
Having had the car for a couple of weeks now, my observations are:
- intrusive low speed gear "chatter"
- very easy to stall in traffic, parking, reversing etc
- car speed is very gradient sensitive (lack of momentum)
- improved pick-up at full throttle (no surprises there)
So, despite the enhanced performance, personally I feel it reduces the car's on-road driveability.
Would a "partially-lightened" 964 Carrera 4 solid flywheel be a better solution for road driving ?
Any thoughts mucho appreciated.
Cheers, Will

If you want it to be more useable then I'd say go back to the standard set up.
FWIW I'm with you: For regular road use, especially in traffic, the RS set up is a pain. I love the tasty, sharp, race-car sounding blips you can give it on the way down the box, but otherwise standard wins every time.

I have never found chatter when driving, only when idling in neutral ....
Stalling in traffic is only a question of experience .... subject to the tickover being good, which (unlike the 964RS) a 993 should be
Engine inertia is not power, so maybe a higher gear would be the solution on a gradient ...
Tactility, heel and toe in quicker down-changes and faster up-changes, general crispness and responsiveness are the balancing argument. All better on an RS ...
To my 964RS I fitted Motec and larger injectors to a fully rebuilt blueprinted engine, ARP bolts, titanium valve inserts, oversized mains, high capacity oil pump etc.
Perfect tickover, very light flywheel, over 310lb ft of torque at 4800 rpm and almost 320 bhp at 6000 rpm. Perfectly balanced and no stress.
What's not to like ?
