After years of deliberation, 997 C2s', BMW M6's, Aston DB9's and Audi R8's I have recently decided that I am going to get into a 997 Turbo.

The lure of the pork is strong and I was going to keep my SC range rover and spend 5 grand on a Boxster but have cast that idea aside.

I've never driven one and will more than likely be going the OPC route primarily due to the 2 year warranty and i have had one or two not so good experiences with Indys.

My budget is between £50/60k so I'm hoping to be able to get a half decent one

Anything I need to know before I start, what I should be looking for or any other tips or things to avoid please?

Oh and for those that have them, are they really all that?

Hello

I have had one before, very nice cars and stunning to look at, esp in black.

However they do become a bit boring, as it’s so easy to go very fast with doing very little. Also from the list of cars you have had you’re going to miss the sound of a sporty exhaust. Any sports exhaust fitted to the 997 TT will void the OPC warranty.

+1 in terms of OPC! Can't beat that warranty.

In terms of packages - very good to have...

Adaptive Sports Seats
PCCB
Rear Axle-Differential lock
Sport Chrono Package Plus
Sport Shifter
Thicker three-spoke Steering wheel

For your budget you can get a nice spec 2008 model and if you can push a little more on your budget then you may get the PCM3 and newer version of the engine.

If you get a 2008, check the month of registration and make sure the major service is not due a couple of months after you buy it as that will cost you a few £'s in the first few months, everything else you will no doubt be aware of, brakes if its a garage queen and tyres as it may be close but not close enough for OPC to change them.

Picked my 2008 model up past month from OPC Sutton Coldfield and was subject to a major service before they handed it over :-)
I made them provide me a report on the inspection tyre depths and brake conditions.
The warranty on the 2006 -2008 models engines are worth their weight in gold some might say

Good Luck and happy hunting

I'm also considering a 997 Turbo but it's got to be a manual for me because those buttons are completely counter-intuitive (unless you can stretch to a newer one with the paddles).

After ringing around, I might have found one at an OPC that they are taking in part ex in the next two weeks, 2007, 15k miles, manual, all the toys, but they want close to 60 for it

I need to drive one asap

Absolute must is the warranty! I have had quite a bit of work on mine covered under warranty:~

Radiator leaks
New starter motor
Spolier control unit failure
Engine mount, which ruined the rear PU.
Tyre pressure controller

Awesome car, useable every day and keeps you safe. The exhaust note is the biggest disappointment.

You don't say if it is a 2007 56,07 or 57 reg. But what about this one it will be a 08 reg. Just make sure it has its service.

Not as many available at opc's as there was a few months ago and the prices have not moved for a while even though they are not selling.

Had one for four years, intentions are to keep for another four years. On its eight year anniversary I am going to fking marry it.
Forget all the they get boring and don't make a brmmm brmmmm sound, only boys bother about the bloody sound ( which is poor) but who as ever had a Turbo charged car that sounds good.

One of the best cars Porsche has ever made (for day to day road use). OK the 993 Turbo is brilliant too but long in the tooth and you will pay more for a minter soapbox

60k ish is too much for something 5 years old particularly now that the 997 has been superseded. Prices will tank soon. I bet the trade in price would be 10 or more less. You're too old for this.

997 turbo - gen1 or gen 2 = epic all rounder. Can be spanked or used for a Tesco run. Fantastic bit of kit.

You get bluetooth, larger screen and touchscreen with PCM 3.

Cheers

That was the one thing that I thought strange by Porsche, lack of bluetooth

One OPC told me on a recent test drive of a 2008 Cayenne GTS that had PCM2 it was because Porsche preferred to concentrate on the engineering of the car 'rather than fancy gadgets' rolleyes

Last year i made the mistake of buying a 997.1 turbo with 13.000 miles instead of a GT3. I paid £65.000 at an OPC had terrible problems with it and eventually rejected it. I only did 2000 miles in it and they only offered £45,000 by 4 different dealers but eventually eeked £55k because of the problems I had. To top it off the OPC had back on sale @ £59,995?
The turbo handles terribly, they sit too high, wallow on the motorway despite PASM/sport on or off and they sound crap. Go drive a standard 997 or GT3 then the turbo and you will see what I mean. Yes the turbo gives a nice shove in the back on full throttle but by the time you go into third you have brake and slow down.
997 GT3 is so alive and thrilling compared to th turbo.

I think you had a lemon mate. On the motorway is their natural habitat. I've had mine close to 200mph with no drama and certainly no wallowing. The feeling of confidence a sorted car instills in a driver is quite disconcerting as its got to the point where within 10 seconds you're in licence losing or worse territory. It is a comfortable sledgehammer GT though never a scalpel road racer like a GT3. Having said that if youre using the car for 10k-15k miles per annum I wouldnt have one without a warranty. Just as an aside I've had £45k offered recently to me for a 2007 50k mile car against a new panny, cayenne or 991. I just can't stand the thought if giving it up though!
