After scouring the web for advice (Many thanks to PHers) I took the plunge and purchased my first true sports car a 56 plate 997 Carrera 2S Basalt black and black......in super nic given high mileage (87k).
I had a PPI done by JMG Bournemouth thumbupwhich saved me plenty of cash (Main issues Front tyres and more importantly rear discs and pads which I wouldn't have picked up on so money well spent.....engine and mechanical's all fine with some other minor wear and tear to be expected for age)

The only issue is a rattling when going over rough surfaces, NOT bumps just rough surfaces and it seems that it must be the new brakes as when I apply them the rattling stops. Also when reversing and applying the brake there is a very slight knock.

Does that sound like loose pads/clips/brakes parts ???
It seems that way to me.

I am taking it in to PSR in Stortford for a wheel alignment, I have mentioned the problem which they will look for before doing any alignment work in case its down to worn suspension parts.

Any advice as always gratefully received.

I had a 997 that did that, was a worn bush on near side front suspension.

Congrats OP. Enjoy the car - we've had our black/black c2s just over a month! As said, suspension bushes can be very rattly (sp?).

Speak to Chris Franklin at Center Gravity near Tamworth (01827 718800). Chris specialises in Porsche suspension and is regarded by many (myself included) as the best in his field. Chris will be able to diagnose and rectify any suspension-related issues and then set-up your car to drive just the way you want it to.

The way Chris normally works is to firstly discuss with you your levels of driving competence/expertise and your expectations. You will then go out on a test drive, with Chris driving, over many (carefully-chosen) miles where various aspects of your car's handling can be assessed. (The roundabout test will definitely be one of the highlights)! Chris will point-out problems and inconsistencies over the route. Once back at base, work on your car will begin. Assuming you are retaining the standard suspension, any worn or faulty parts will be replaced and then the suspension will be given a geometry setup that will a) cure any untoward behaviour and b) make the car handle in the most appropriate manner for you and your driving style/ability.

Once the geo is done, you'll go for a further test drive with Chris to confirm that any issues have been corrected and you will then drive the car yourself. This bit is usually followed by a massive, ear-to-ear grin as these cars really handle well when properly aligned. Unfortunately, most are miles out - even from the factory. The difference, once the car is properly sorted, is nothing short of shocking and the drive becomes very addictive.

Finally, Chris (and his wife Jayne who runs the business with him) are two of the nicest people you could wish to meet. Being able to deal with people like this (and have your car transformed into something even more special at the same time) is one of the more pleasurable aspects of Porsche ownership. Well worth the full day out to Tamworth.

I have heard many good things about them, and will at one point in time get up there BUT for now given that I think it's brake related, the car is new to me and my driving style will be far from agressive I'll stay close to home with PSR who I've also read very positive things about.

Cheers

RDG - you won't be disappointed with PSR. They're a good outfit, and just expanding their premises and taking on more staff (they can be a little slow getting back to emails, hence hiring a receptionist according to their facebook).

Out of interest, whereabouts are you? I drive a white Cayman S in Sawbridgeworth...

Whilst this could be one of the front suspension top mounts - I think you're right to look at the brakes (if recently changed) as there are a variety of clips and springs required to prevent noises / keep things from moving around ...

Good luck and enjoy the car!

Lovely part of the world - know the owner of the old 'Edelweiss' restaurant if you remember it?

And yep, Audley End isn't far - do PSR do courtesy cars yet, or are you just letting the train take the strain (or the missus?). I'm going to get my Cayman's oil changed on an annual basis so I'll be up at PSR later in the year for that little job, though, since it's under warranty, I was tied into the OPC network for the service.
