I don't know who specialises in 924 engines, but recall that Porsch - Apart at Bury had a 924 sprint car, they may have built the engine themselves (sorry for lack of factual content).
It also rings a bell that Loe Bank(?) in that neck of the woods used to have something to do with the 924 race series, they may fettle 924s.

If it isn't an "S" just fit a 944 engine and save a lot of money.
If only I could but I've got a feeling that the scrutineers would spot that! (The car is going to be used in various forms of classic motorsport). Infact a 944 would be a better bet but they are just not old enough. I need a car built in 81 or earlier and the earliest 944s are 82. But I am looking for S levels of power form a 2 litre engine. Have a look on my website as well for people who know the 924 Carrera GT:

210bhp can be squeezed out of the 924 Turbo S2 engine with a turbocharger and intercooler, but it's not easy to keep cool on track. I swapped mine for a 968 engined 924 (the ex Porsch-Apart car mentioned above in this thread).

Is that absolutely certain? Could it be that they were introduced for the 1982 model year, meaning some will have been made at the end of 1981?I have not closed the 944 avenue entirely but I think I would have more choice of pre 82 924 than 944 so I was working on the basis that a good 924 would be a better basis than a bad 944. Plus they are slightly lighter and the 2 litre engine fits nicely with some championships class structre.
If anybody knows for sure then let me know!

As an update I have found evidence of at least one RHD 944 in 1981. There is a red one tested in both Car and Autocar.

A really useful site for contacts - though I need to stay normally aspirated.http://www.924gt.com/servicing.html

just researched my books. Here is the 944 timeline:
June 1981. 163bhp 944 announced
NOV 1981 Production starts
april 1982 UK launch
may 1982 US launch
So it looks like you'll need to find a european spec LHD 944 from the first 2 months of production to qualify.
The first UK press car used seems to be reg ORD524X, first driven in Autocar in may 1982

Thanks Williamp, that tallies with what I thought. Really helpful. Bit about autocar is interesting - there is a red 944 on the cover of the Dec 81 issue of Car Magazine but I can't see if it is certainly RHD. There is another red car on the December 26th 1981 issue of Motor but the angle of the shot means it is not clear if it is a 944 or 924. June 1981. 163bhp 944 announced

This leaves me with 2 944 options - try and convince the MSA to give me dispensation to run a later car (unlikely) or trawl Europe to find a very early LHD car which would be difficult.
Or buy a 924 which was the original plan! There is some lack of clarity in the blue book. Infact it is totally contradictory about using turbo charged cars, so there is the slim possibility of a 924 Turbo which would be as fast as a standard 944 and narrower, a good thing on the rallies as there are lots of cones involved in some of the tests. 924 not as comfortable as 944 but a massive step up from the Midget it is replacing!
