Out-dated telephone handset on 911
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I'm looking to purchase a 911 which, because of funds, I suspect will be 2003 -2005 plate.
One of my (many) criteria is that it must have factory fitted sat' nav.
Unfortunately many of these cars also have the very out-dated telephone handset.
Does any one know if Porsche have a design solution to 'loose' the 'phone.
Obviously I could use a scissor solution (not literally) but it still laves the recess where the phone one fitted.
Thanks,
Mike

Out of interest, why is a poor SatNav that you wouldn't be grateful for if your kids bought from the charity shop a "must-have"?I'm looking to purchase a 911 which, because of funds, I suspect will be 2003 -2005 plate.

You might be better looking for non-PCM cars as well, and fitting a modern unit instead.
The sat-nav isn't that great, in fact the whole system isn't particularly user friendly.
However, as long as you have hands free (I'm not sure why you wouldn't with the phone module installed) you can remove the phone and fit a blanking plate, it's relatively cheap unless you need it trimmed in leather.
Google "996 handset removal"

On this site most people always tell you to avoid the sat nav...me personally would rather it was there than not. Yes agreed, its not the most functional, but it does get you from A to B. Also, makes the dash of the car look more modern and complete - which is a good thing on a car where the interior is probably the biggest let down in terms of looking out of date.
Regarding the telephone removal, I'm sure I have heard of blanking plates available.

I did this on an 02 996. It was easy to remove the handset. I seemed to baffle the OPC by then wanting to remove the part that the cradle was attached to and replace it with a normal lower centre console side, they told me to just put a blanking plate on to cover the holes. That didn't sound ideal to me, but they were giving me silly prices to buy a new leather covered side bit.
In the end I got the part that I needed by buying the entire lower centre console from someone on eBay for about £20. Put the new part on, disposed of the rest. Job done.

PCM satnav (at least 2.x, 3.x seems better with its touchscreen) is pretty archaic as compared to even vaguely modern Alpine or Pioneer units that do the same job, but as stated it is often a "must have" simply because one would expect satnav on a car of that prestige.
By "one" I mean potential buyers, even if you can take it or leave it yourself.
Of course PCM does more than just satnav.

I'm not sure that something with a cassette slot in it can be classed as looking modern?
Anyway, I replaced the side trim piece in a Boxster once - from the OPC it was £14 for vinyl or £40 for leather. Probably a bit dearer now but still shouldn't be a deal breaker, and likely available used from breakers.

£40? I can't remember exactly what they said to me, but it was along the lines of "if it's even possible to order then it'll be hundreds!" Goes to show how important it is to have an OPC that actually understands what the customer is asking for and what parts are available. Couldn't have been much clearer, we were sitting in my car at the time to try and ensure he actually knew what I meant. He was probably giving me an estimate to replace the entire centre console!
Some of the leather trim bits are eye-waterlingly expensive.
Would Sir care for a set of leather sunvisors? There would be change out of $1k (but not much).
