All year use - 993
Discussion
Always fancied a 911 at some point and the time might be approaching.
Will need a car that I can use for 30mls each day (15 each way) along some great roads for my commute to the station. Will be all year round use, so car will need to cope with wet roads and potentially snow etc.
A number of mates have said a 911 will cope nicely. So what's the general consensus on here?
996 not an option no matter how cheap they are. 997 might be but I'd really prefer an air cooled car, so am thinking 993.
Have done plenty of reading about rust etc, but what's the general view of using a 993 as an every day car?
Am also thinking C4/C4S, mainly due to a perception of some extra traction for when the conditions get dodgy and in the case of the latter, because I like the way they look
Is it worth opening those cans of worms? It won't have to be the last word in sharpness as I have other things for that. Just more fun than a 2004 Beetle as at present that's the likely option available if my other half has her way

A 993 is a great daily proposition. I used to use mine as a daily until I just couldn't bring myself to drive it through salt anymore. Daft I know.
They are tough as old boots and great fun. Yes, rust is an issue now, but its not major, you just need to keep on top of it in the usual areas.
In terms of 2 vs 4, just get what you want. My view is that a 911 is rear wheel drive but if you want the extra security of 4wd then fine.
Yes, the maintenance costs will be significant, but they will be offset by the minimal depreciation.
There really is no downside.

Thanks guys.
Presumably you can't really stop things like the screens, bumper support areas and door straps going, you just have to budget to have them redone now and then?
Also, are the engines genuinely good for stratospheric miles? Everything I've read suggests they are.

The Workshop Supervisor @ Malton told me that they have only had to rebuild 2 engines due to failures!!! And one was due to low oil.

30 miles sounds perfect to find time to enjoy it daily - if it was only 5 or 10 it would hardly be worth it. I've been disappointed at the lack of snow this winter as I enjoyed the smugness of driving round in all conditions (with suitable tyres) with no problem and with the benefit of a car that heats up quicker than anything water cooled.

I think the only thing that would put me off your plan is the prospect of leaving a nice 993 in a station car park all day. If it's anything like the station I commute from, the spaces are quite narrow for bigger modern cars, none of the other muppets can get their cars between the parking lines and everyone seems happy to leave/receive dents to side panels.
If that doesn't bother you too much then forge ahead fella.

Had my 993 for over 14-years now - for the first 7 or 8-years of my ownership it was used as my daily driver averaging around 8k miles a year in all weathers. (These days it's my weekend car)
As previous posters have said, provided thay are maintained properly and you will see from the picture below they are perfectly up to being used and enjoyed fully as a DD:

Hi
I've been using an 993 as a daily driver for the last two years, its been great, no problems at all. I would consider a tip if you're doing town driving, they are fun and easy on the legs! Watch out for the usual air con issues, its essential for a daily driver in the summer. Look at a few, choose a good one on condition, not spec and enjoy yourself!

Thanks for the replies.
Station has plenty of room, and dinks are easily sorted if they happen.
Just need to look at the fleet for a bit of rationalisation and then look for a decent car. Have seen a couple I quite like, but need to keep the wallet in the pocket for a bit longer.
Assuming all things come together I should be in a 993 soon I think

I had my first 993 experience a few weeks ago and it was utterly magical. And that picture above. Gosh, I never thought I'd say this, but I really, really want a 993.To the OP. The downside is they attract a lot of unwanted attention. One of the reasons mine is a Garage Queen.

. Usual stuff, do your homework and buy on condition. Took me some time to find my C2.
