Im not even looking for a 964 but when I read that ad and looked at the pics i fell in love.

21 Years ago I had a 1990 Carrera 2 Cab in Guards red with mag.

I called the dealer a couple of times and it all sounded like the 20K price tag was justified.

It was explained to me that they were a Mercedes approved body shop and it had just had £4000 worth of work at retail.

Well, after 4 hours on the train I can tell you a bit more about it.

It is 3 or 4 shades of white with bits of over spray and dry patches along with thin patches through to the primer. The passenger door looks like an old taxi with all its ripples and layers of paint. It appears to have been painted at many different times over the years and never by anyone who knows how to paint a a car properly.

Inside it smells like a old Jaguar found in a barn and the interior has not been prepared and has the normal untreated scuffs here and there.

Thats where i stopped.

I didnt even start the car or look at any of the history as i knew i couldnt live with it
and that the 20k price tag was nonsense.

I had the funds ready and was expecting to be driving home in it today but sadly it was not to be.

I just wish these dealers would tell it how it is and price things accordingly.

At 13k -15k i suppose it would be what you could expect.

I would say that before I made the trip I called Zentrum in Nottingham who have done the last 3 services.
They know the car and they confirmed that it was mechanically excellent and that it had always been maintained perfectly. It has not had a top end rebuild but they felt it wasn't needed.

They said that it was the body that had needed the attention which led me to have the chat
with the seller about the 4k of bodywork that had just been completed in their Mercedes "Approved" body shop.

I think this may have made my expectations a little high and exaggerated my disappointment on inspection.

Ive calmed down a little now and on reflection its perhaps unfair for me to slate it down to 13k. Its not for me to value it.

There was another C2 in the showroom and it was a stunner so its not like they don't know how they should look.

I think this is a great post and will help others who may also sit on the train for a long time. There should be more posts like this. You don't have to slag someone off, just tell it like it is.

Out of interest, did you quiz the seller about the poor bodywork? What was his reaction? I think I would have tried to get at the least the train fare back.

How much time and money have I spent chasing all over the country at porsches that were not worth bothering with. I feel for you.
We should be able to sue under trades description

A similar thing happened to me once at a so called Porsche 'Indie'. The seller knew that I knew what I was talking about, agreed that the car was misrepresented and scurried into his office and shut the door. Wouldn't come out. It was like a scene from Watchdog. Dealers do not like people with half a brain in their heads.

Just a friendly word of caution with 964s. Same thing happenned today.

There are some good ones around and you can get lucky but I can give you some interesting stats - 4 out the last 5 we have PPI'd have need between £4k and £10k (minimum) work doing. And that is before sorting out the paint.

Amazed that some of the adverts saying they were in good condition turns out to be no where near. Both private and trade. These were all up to the £15k mark.

What it tell me, imo, is that unless you are really lucky, £15k is the bottom line for something decent, setting aside paint.

To have one as a project, you are looking at
- interior £3k-£5k depending on options
- paint (respray) £6k or so
- suspension, discs/pads etc, £1.5k
- engine - £8k for full rebuild.

They you have a great car.

So working back, that is approx £20k. Now add the donor car (minimum of £10k) and you are talking about £30k for a full restored 964 in a1 condition.

So I would say that prices, which seem to be heading upwards, are reflecting what it costs to have one of these towards a1 condition.

Whatever you do, get a PPI and hopefully you will be lucky.

Good advice on here! Especially Ken 996Talot.

I can't believe the state of these cars now. I have given up my search for a C2. I may even be selling my Turbo again, in a month or so.

£23K would buy you a very nice car. Not perfect body wise having 3 little blisters and a bit of fading in a couple of places but perfect mechanically and a damn sight better than most 964s out there. Given what people are asking for Carreras my Turbo is a genuine steal and anything you spend on paint will simply add to the value by the same amount. That £23k is no offers though. That's the bottom line figure in my head, that I'd take for a hassle free sale.

Mods edit my post if it's not allowed.

It looks like this thread may have come to the sellers attention as the ad has now gone.

No reaction at all, Zero.

He had no interest in my observations whatsoever.

He offered no explanation.

After I tried to point out the problems he never mentioned the car again, not a single word.

He then gave me a lift back to the train station.

Hopefully he didn't have the meter running.

Sorry you'd a wasted journey. I'd a similar experience looking at a Boxster a few years ago, and the dealer was completely dis-interested.

Thanks for the 9m link but thats a cab and i need a coupe and its a 4 and i defo need a 2.

Surprised to see 9m offer a car with the wrong wheels on though.
I think mismatched model parts are the worst thing you can do to any car.
