How can you tell a 996 has had the X50 pack option? Is there a was you can check the factory spec of a 996 like the way you can with BMW's?
Turbos had the X50 option. Normally aspirated had the X51 option. Sticker under the bonnet should list the option codes, and X50/X51 should be there as an option code. If the sticker has gone, the option codes are (I think) printed on the inside cover of the service book.
There are some hardware differences for the X50 - bigger turbos and (I think) different rads, but not entirely sure, and no idea what the differences look like.
I don't think you can tell if the turbo has the X50 option by looking at the car eg exhaust tips etc. Feeling the [cold] rads may help, if you know what to feel for.
Best way is by teh option codes or through a VIN check with Porsche.
As regards what you get, the big difference is the larger turbos (K24s) and 30BHP. I understand that although you shave 0.2s of the 0-60 time and add an extra 3mph at the top end, you also get a bit more turbo lag.
Personally, rather than seeking out an X50 car out, i would go for the best condition, mechanically sound turbo you can find. If it is an X50, great, if not, don't worry about it.
I had a similar experience, found a nice looking X50 but it didn't stand up to an independent inspection so ended up getting a standard turbo car as that was the better car.

Anyone use a 996 turbo as an everyday car? I have two kids one 7 and one infant. I take it a buggy is out of the question
I've ran a supercharged range rover for a while so fuel and maintenance costs doesn't concern me.
That particular car has FPSH 3 owners inc current one and has 75k miles.
I've mad a bid of 17k for it.

I use my 996TT Cab (x50 incidentally) Every day to commute, misture of roads, some days carrying kids, some days not.
Its the perfect car for it, plus roof comes down when the weather is nice and it has a cigarette socket for my curling tongs (before anyone else says it
)
I am firmly of the view that those of us who drive turbo cabs (even the puny non-X50 variant) are entitled to say that we only cut men's hair. Coarse and wiry, tough men's hair at that. With blunt scissors. Its the perfect car for it, plus roof comes down when the weather is nice and it has a cigarette socket for my curling tongs (before anyone else says it
)Men's barbers have long been recognised as up there with oil platform workers and stuntmen in the maniless stakes.

Try a Quinny Zap, I read somewhere it fits in the front boot.

Put the vin number in to this website it will list all specifications your car left the factory with

Run my boggo Turbo as an everyday commuting car and it is excellent and even in terrible London rush-hour it returns 14mpg which I don't think is bad for crawling along (with the odd short burst with the fun pedal).
It also permanently has a baby seat in for the times that we pop our 15-month old daughter in. For some reason our pram/buggy thing seems to be larger and more complex than the space shuttle and so is no-go but reports say the Quinny Zap will slot in the front of a turbo/C4S.
I might change to a cabriolet as it is a lot easier to slot a child in the back without the roof getting in the way and also because it is so much more manly.

Car hot or cold will not matter as wont be too hot to touch, just put your fingers inside the louvers/slats on the rear bumper corners,up inside that area you will see the turbo intercoolers(basically look the same as radiators to the untrained eye),the cooling fins are raised above the main cores on a X50 optioned turbo 996(standard turbo intercoolers the fins are flush/level).
Rear silencers basically appear the same but the silencer part no on the X50 optioned vehicle is different and believe the internals of the silencer are different(more free flow)
Larger turbos on X50 optioned car also.
The above factory modifications on a X50 optioned car are excellent to have and unleash good gains when performing REVO remaps i do,i see this on a regular basis when i am live data logging to collect needed info to adjust timing/boost/fuelling etc
Attached is pic of location of intercoolers (rear bumper removed)
