I know it should be obvious but it's not
I've driven an 06 XK Jag , and a 04 996 C4S.....enjoyed both.
Super luxury and still quick vs a proper sports car.
Still very confused so I thought I'd ask you guys how scared/weary should I be of owning a 3.6l 996 with 50-75k miles.
How expensive would it be to live with as a weekend only car.
Budget up to 23k or so BUT would love to stay as close to 17k as possible unless the increase is worth it.
Any advice welcome

Went out on a run today with about 25 other cars. There was Lambo, 3 R8's about 5 993's and 997's, 2 430's a number of M3's and GTR's - did not see any Jags though!. So if you want a car that is exciting and fun and looks good then it has to to the 911. If you want a long distance tourer - probably driving by yourself, then it is the Jag!! Simples!!

Wasn't this colour when I got her home - awful weather and had to wash her down well!! Great run thought!!

The Jag will make you feel you're getting a load of car for the money. If you're a Jag man you simply won't understand why people buy Porsches. If you love the art of driving then the 996 will be the best car you've ever owned. If you ever sell it its a car you'll remember with fondness more than any other.
The Porsche will also hold its value better in the long term.
Regards e number on the speedo don't give it a second thought other than when trying to ascertain value when purchasing. It won't make a great deal of difference to your running costs. Things simply don't wear out based on the number on the speedo.
Good luck
Henry

Thanks for the replies. Part of the nervousness of going for the 911 was due to the all the information out there on engine failures etc.
Being completely ignorant initially the scaremongering hardly instills confidence.....hence why I thought I'd ask you guys as owners.
Servicing, insurance, fuel costs are not a great concern that's what comes with the ownership of such a car it was more the nasty surprises should things go wrong.
Are these nasty surprises that common?
Obviously buying sensibly at the outset is paramount which is something I will most definitely try to adhere to.

Unlike gaters on the PH Ecosse Runs we do have in addition to numerous 993 996 997 turbo and GT cars Lambos and Fezzas, a Jag XKR cab!!
If you want an auto to cruise around on A roads and motor ways with a decent amount of ability on back roads when the mood takes you get the XKR.
If you bought the car to go down difficult back roads as fast as your skills/bravery will allow, but still want a car you can do a long journey in, get the 911.
Hopefully unbiased - either car will be worth owning.

Again i would point you back to my post :-).
No one can answer your question, if said 996 you buy might need a 8k repair.
It,s a gamble you will have to decide to take.
I would also think about early 996 resale if you add another 15k miles to a 75k mile car.
It,s a 70k car with running costs to match and very poor resale.

If you don't have any major engine maladies............

I saw you (or this car) in Manchester on Friday morning - I was a couple of cars behind you in a (very grubby) Iris Blue 993 C2.
As I looked at your car, the following thoughts went through my mind...
- I don't really like Speed Yellow
- I prefer the narrow body cars, and the Turbo 'S' bodykit is definitely a bit OTT
...immediately followed by:
- So why am I dribbling?...and
- IwantitIwantitIwantitIwantit...
Just beautiful, congratulations!
OP - sorry for thread deviation.

If it's just for the weekend I'd say both a Jaguar or a 996 are not really just for the weekend cars. They're not special enough.
Personally for a weekend car I'd go for a 993 or a 997 C2 (preferably S).
I've got a 997 C4S, but I use it all the time. It's a great car, but for something for the weekend ...
