I am off to look at this http://pistonheads.com/sales/3636703.htm for my wife tomorrow, I have had TVRs and BMWs but never a Porsche. Any tips or advice to give regarding what to ask, or look for?

Cheers Nick

The best advice would be to have a PPI. If you decide to 'go it alone' then listen for any unusual engine noises including tapping, any oil leaks and any signs of oil burning. If it has any of these then run a mile.

Part Ex'd my Impreza for a Audi A3 3.2 with them. Good to deal with from a buyers point of view. They have had Porsches in before a few times and had 2 in when i got my car, but for that reason as they are not specialist, definitely get it inspected.

Are you aware of the potential engine issues , IMS ?

Get it inspected along with a DME report which will show any extra rev counter activity beyond the redline.
If it has some serious over revs and you subsequently try and put a Porsche warranty on it they will refuse.

Looks nice I must add , but get it checked.

+1 re: PPI - well worth doing.

That aside a nice looking car though I never rated Bose in my Boxster (not that good, and a real PITA to integrate an iPod), and come resale I reckon that interior colour may hurt you, and many dealers will tell you that SatNav is a must in a 'high value' car like a Porsche. Use those to your advantage now though, and who cares?

Also, given a recent post on here, ask if the car is entirely standard - if you can get that written down. Somebody here bought a mapped Cayman and was refused a Porsche warranty (which I think is something worth having, just in case).

Good luck and enjoy - they're great cars.

conversly I think the black and cream colour scheme is pretty well perfect.

I assume that 'beyond the redline' activity requires modifications?

is a PPI something the dealer should organise, or should I do it? Anyone recommend somewhere in Hamshire or Surrey?

You should do it. Search on here for those that you contract to do it for you, including putting in to Porsche for their 111-point check. Nice looking motor; good luck!

Think overrange revs are usually due to missed gear changes

Umm, not too sure the silver trim blends in with the cream interior...

Would people still want a PPI carried out if buying from a specialist with a good rep like 911 Virgin or JZM etc

Normally you would tell the dealer you want to get it PPI'd by an OPC and then negotiate on the price if the OPC finds any issues. Try calling OPC Guildford in the morning - give them the registration and ask what work was done on the car and if any issues were logged. All work will show up on the computer if the car was serviced within the Guoldford (PGB) network, otherwise you have to find out where it was serviced which you can do by giving Guildford the registration plate.

Apart from oil leaks and compter stuff like overrevs which the OPC will check for you could check:

1. 2, 4 and 6 year service stamps are in the book
2. All services were done on time / at correct mileage
3. All tyres are the same brand, correct size and have enough tread (you have to factor in £1k+ if they need changing soon)
4. How much life is left on the discs and pads (you have to factor in £1k+ if they are heavy lipped)
5. Check hood goes up and down properly
6. And how much tax is left
