What is the UK legislation regarding catalysors?
How do you get you car MOTed if you had the cat removed? (and don't tell me you fit it back for every MOT test...)
If your car is pre 1993 (can't remember which month), you can take it off and burn it. If newer than that you're stuck with it. Options are sports cats or exactly what you've said, put it back on for the MOT. (Yes, some people do this despite the effort)
JZMachtech, amongst others, do a 100 cell cat conversion / replacement. This seems to release an extra 10 bhp in the '02 carrera for around 1k.
Will the emissions increase? If so will it bugger the engine management settings due to leccy sensors in the exhaust etc.
