Cayenne Tow Bar
Discussion
Hi guys
Been asked by my dad whos looking at buying a cayenne to find him some information.
He needs a tow bar for the use of towing a trailor around though very few cayennes come with them. With it being an optional extra do all cayennes come with the loom for trailor electrics fitted as standard? As he is considering buying one without a tow bar and getting an aftermarket one fitted though doesnt want to bother with the hassle of the original electric sliding one.
Thanks in advance

A quick look on eBay shows cheapo bars available, but these will look ugly and mean cutting the bumper. Why would you do that just to save £100 or so? Better to get a decent one with removable tow-hitch that offers more flexibility, looks better when fitted and is invisible when not fitted, thereby maintaining the car's looks/desirability/value.
Any decent towbar supplier should be able to advise on wiring.

I searched here:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=cayenne+deta...
and this one looks the best value, at only £35 more than the cheapest detachable one:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Westfalia-Towbar-Porsche...
Email or call them, I'm sure they'll talk you through what's required for wiring it.
One make that doesn't come up is Witter, who make them for Touaregs (what look like original equipment ones, but I can't confirm whether they are) and look very similar to the Westfalia ones.

Be aware that the factory fit/dealer fit Tow bar comes with an additional control unit. Hence an increased price.
The reason for this is that when the Cayenne is towing, other systems are then put into a towing mode.
For example: Air Suspensions/Level Control then sets to normal level based on the additional load at the rear.
PSM operates in a towing mode and changes its stability strategy based on the fact that there is something at the back pushing the back of the car around.
Just worth considering...

Exactly that! The original one is brilliant. I have one on mine. The reason for this is that when the Cayenne is towing, other systems are then put into a towing mode.

If your pa hasnt bought the Cayenne yet, simply buy one with the towbar option already ticked... They maybe a little less readily available, but to go fudging round afterwards and having to pay someone to fit it, then the additional worry of having meddled with the onboard electrics and settings etc - Probably worth searching a little harder in the first place for the right car.
When I bought mine recently I read through the handbook and was (stupidly) under the impression that they'd fitted them to all of them and neatly tucked them away. I dont intend to do much towing, but it would have been handy (and looked quite cool I think), dragging the 944 track slag around with the Cayenne
Good luck with your search, Ive been very pleased with mine (2004 S). Lot of car for the money (mighty thirsty though
)!
