Should I or Shouldnt I?
Discussion
Been lurking in this bit of the forum for a little while gathering knowledge. Been a long time fan of the 911 and have lusted after buying one for a little while. Now in a position where the business is doing well and I can afford one. Initially thought I could add £15k to the part ex for my 2006 335i which didn't seem too bad - maybe £30k to spend on a car.
Went to an OPC today for a browse and they have a 2008 911/977.2 in black with black for a shade under £40k. 64,000 miles though (although i do low milage at the moment). Sat in it and it was stunning. It ticks alot of boxes for me being a bit newer, I'm more comfortable with spending that amount of cash on a new model as opposed to something the same age as my BMW.
What do you reckon? With the warranty etc it didn't seem too bad. There are only two negatives - the mileage and the cost.
Any thought a welcome.

If it ticks a load of boxes for you and you can afford the extra then go for it. The mileage only really becomes of concern when you come to sell, but if you are planning on keeping it for a good while then don't worry about it. They're good for high mileage plus you'll have an OPC warranty that is renewable so long as you fit genuine Porsche parts.
The 997.2 engine seems to be more robust in the long term than the 'Oh, what's that noise? Oh, it's my rear intermediate shaft shattering and my RMS is dribbling goo....' Gen 1 engine and the OPC warranty is as good as you're going to get. The fact that you're doing low mileage will average out the higher initial mileage and if it's as nice as you say then go for it. They might even throw in a free key ring...

Well the man from OPC has answered the question for me. Offered me a fair few grand less for trade in than market value and didnt seem keen on any kind of haggling.
When I bought the 335i I got over what I was expecting on trade in and then money off the top too. Left me feeling happy with the deal. Is it naive to expect the same from an OPC? He basically said he would have to decide whether to call me if anything else comes in.
Mind you there was a chap in there ordering a new Cayenne (I think) who was basically saying yes to every question asked so perhaps they aren't used to being questioned on price.

If your car's nice spec and condition I'd buy it for a fair market value (trade). You're then in a better position to try to negotiate as a cash buyer on the OPC car.If that's of interest just email the details: marcus@autoperfom.com
Just a personal view but I think close to £40k for a 64k miler is a bit steep, even if it is a 997.2.
Was the car in question an 'S' model ? I was looking at a non-S 997.2 PDK (<20k mls) and I got to £39,750 from an OPC before I pulled out and decided on something else instead.
I think you'd be better to sell the 335i to a trade buyer (eg like the chap who posted above) then negotiating a better cash price. There are a decent number of 997.2s out there and for c£40k i'd be looking for one with much lower mileage.

If I were you, I would get rid of the BM to a trade chap ASAP before it de-values further. If you need, you can hire a cheap car for a few weeks. Just means you can move when you need to other than worry about off-loading your current car.
That can work but can also put too much pressure on to buy a new car (possibly rushing in to something a little hastily). I'd "stand on" an under-write for a couple of weeks and can always re-value as time and mileage progress on the BMW, things can also be co-ordinated such that you switch from car to another on the same day.Hi
Firstly I agree with other posters on here £.40 K with that miles is too much regardless of OPC Warranty etc.
Secondly - Regarding discounts at OPC on New/Used - The New Cayenne Diesel is presently on around 8 month Delivery (longer in USA/CHINA) - I got mine last year (July after ordering in Feb - I was lucky!) you don't get a penny off - they don't need to discount unfortunately! You want one - you pay the price simples!
In my experience with OPC (Vast!) they just DON'T LIKE TRADE INS!!
I was bid £3K down on the 4 X 4 which the Cayenne was replacing - sold it to an aquaintence for the proper money and that was that.
As regards the one you have seen at OPC - I'm be mortified if they didn't "Deal" on a cash sale with used stock - it's just the P/EX that's snookering you.
If you want to P/EX then Independant/Specialist is the way to go (Plenty of
good ones) or if you must OPC then sell the BMW elsewhere and get haggling!

the guy at your OPC need to sharpen his pencil, see this at similar price with lower miles:
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3508696.htm
Also worth trying the good indys like Northway, RSJ, 911Virgin...they all can do warranties if needed.
Previous advise re your current car is spot as you'll get a better deal for a straight cash buy.

if you really like the car you saw at the OPC then put a deposit down and you then have a month to complete the deal. In that month try selling the BM yourself. If you can sell it for a higher amount they have offered you great. I did the same a couple of years ago with my BM. In the end price I was offered part-ex could not be matched privately. End game was that I just needed to be driving a p car in a month!

Talk to 911 Virgin - they've got a few 997's in / due in and as their prices are more reasonable than an OPC - it might make it financially easier to swallow ....
but no 2 years warranty so they need to be 2.5k cheaper :-) might be more expensive in the long run.
So I bought 911 Virgin's warranty (£400 per annum) which is pretty good for major components (like engines), but they are more reasonable (for the same comparable age / spec / mileage) than an OPC - whilst still offering nice, clean & tidy examples.
