Looks like work life may change very soon....bye bye company car (Audi A5 Cab 2.0D)and hello big Co Car allowance (£12.6k p.a. before tax).....currently have a modified 996TT for weekend fun (no plan to change that!)but will need to lease / buy something to do 550 miles a week.

Current thoughts (post a trawl through Autotrader and Pistonheads) are a £25k Boxter S or Cayman S, low mileage 2007ish example, put 50K on over 2 years and then get rid....or something semi sensible like an Alpina D3, another A5 Diesel, Range Rover Sport (Diesel) or 370Z or ?????

Thoughts, I spend 10-12 hours a week on my work commute, should I go fun or practical? The real world difference between D or Petrol is circa £2.5k......does that really matter given the allowance? Do I want an armachair or something that makes me smile most days?

Appreciate this is not the worst problem in the world......but would appreciate some views/opinions. (joys of forums!!)

Personally I think I would get something economical/diesel but still fun to drive and that will run and run without to many issues and invest the extra dosh in upgrading to a super dooper weekend car.

Have spent too much (and to be honest am too happy) with the 996TT so that's not a real option (at least today!)

Are you the chap I met at crail on the charity day? If so, I'm the chap with the silver C4S..

I ran a Cayman S to Aberdeen from Arbroath everyday for a year, cold weather tyres for the winter, a service and that's all it cost, think I was spending about £100 per week on fuel.

My vote is on you getting a fun car!

Does the £12.6k have to cover fuel or is this purely for the cost of buying, servicing and maintaing the vehicle?

The allowance should give you approx £700 per month after tax, which gives you a decent budget to play with if it is excluding fuel.

As an alternative option, Mercedes are currently doing some rather excellent lease deals. You could get a BRAND NEW C63 AMG coupe on a 3 year lease for £702 per month including VAT with around £2k down. That would be fun, very smart and discrete enough for business.

Fuel not included....only concern about leasing is the annual mileage of circa 24K....is that a problem (have never leased a car!)

think the wind noise on the A90 drag would piss me off after a while in a boxster!! Think they are both cracking cars to drive, sharp turn in and wonderful noise as you hit and pass 4k rpm..... So sweet! You will want the S in either as the others just don't cut it!!

What else have you done to the Turbo?

Boom! You'll need to bring it to Aberdeen when the salt is off the roads, Ross (he had the other blue turbo) has been talking about power up-grades.... A wee run in yours would probably push him over the edge!

This is the way to do it. It's all about contrast.

Here you go Hamish - fast, fun and practical, low road tax and will give your turbo a run for it's money !! (ok I exaggerate there a little)

I borrowed an Alpina D3 for a couple of days - lovely car and one of the best handling diesels I've ever driven. Not slow either! It was only the 9 month lead time that meant that I didn't put in an order .....
