Chaps (and chapesses where applicable),
Considering s purchase, but have no previous with these beasties. Requirements are something which will be happier than a TVR with lower miles, and some standing; not way to treat a Tiv, or any other car I suppose, but Tivs in particular...
So, these came to mind. Question is - what model should I be considering? You guys are the experts, so welcome comments or responses to the following:
1. I'm thinking an older 911, as opposed to a (much) newer Cayman or Boxter
2. Say a nominal budget of < £30k (really don't want to spend more than that for a seldom used weekender)
3. Lower milage 996 or higher milage 997?
4.2 vs 4?
5. Consider a cheap 996 Turbo?
6. Will an older ragtop be a can of worms?
Appreciate there's going to be a lot of differing opinions, but it's all useful for me. Just hope we don't get any in-fighting
Thanks in advance -Phil

996 turbo all the way... I use as a weekend car and its great.
Some will tell you its not 'special' enough - but go and drive one.
Other options, perhaps older 993? - very popular on this site - but me personally, feels too dated now. Go and have a drive of the 996 turbo would be my advice.
Enjoy the search...

TVR's, are tempramental at best. Leaving cars standing for a length of time is bad. Leaving a TVR is disproportionately so.MTR
Hope that helps - but wouldn't get hung up on it; just one factor.
With a budget of up to 30k, a good 996 Turbo ticks a lot of boxes and makes a lot of sense. i.e;
Serious performance
Mezger engine
Value
Low depr... (I wont say it!)
From the list you have given (and assuming you dont want air cooled), it would be my choice.
Just make sure you get a good one.
EDIT - 2nd option could be a miley 996GT3. Depends on your personal taste.

Given the price / performance ratio - I think a nice 996 Turbo will give you the TVR "thrill factor" whilst being uber reliable and a realistic long term proposition. A mate of mine has one and a quick demo drive offered breathtaking performance ....
Equally the 996 C4S is a nice all rounder and seems to have held it's value better than most others in the range.
996 GT3 will probably be out of bugget - but are fantastically raw drivers cars.
A 997 Carerra / S will also fit into your budget - but offer a different (read more mature) handling and ownership proposition and depending on what TVR you have / had - might not be exciting enough. (And yes I have a 997 C2S which I love to bits).

Air-cooled opens up a whole new world if you are considering it. Pre-impact, impact, NA, Turbo, hot-rod, RS rec, Targa etc etc. They are very different to the water cooled cars. It depends what you want. I bought a 993 Carrera because it was the car I wanted, but you maybe very different!

No guidelines there from my side. "Requirements" are the same - need it to work when I get to drive it, and be reasonably 'interesting'.They are very different to the water cooled cars. It depends what you want. I bought a 993 Carrera because it was the car I wanted, but you maybe very different!

Thats not much to go on fella! Try a 964 or a 993 and see how you find it. You will either fall for it or think its a pile of old noisy doggy do do.If you like TVR's, it may well be the former...

If you're going to spend towards the top end of your budget, I would look to stretch it a little and get a good 996 GT3. Epic car and a good ownership proposition based on your requirements.
If you're thinking cheaper, and want some classic pork, I can recommend a 964 Carrera 2 coupe. I went from a 997 C2S to one of these and absolutely love it. £15k - £20k should get you a good one including a decent mod budget if you like that kind of thing...and hopefully you won't suffer at all from the D word. Drive one first though - air cooleds are not for everyone.

Its a fair point - but also, the point. Very open at the moment, looking for inspiration, not something specific, so you're absolutely right - there's not much to go on.If you like TVR's, it may well be the former...

Did take a peek at the 993/964, and they're not for me. Look too dated (sorry in advance for anyone I've offended there!), so 996/7 is doable, and there seems to be a lot said for the Turbos.
GT3s - maybe, but look to be pushing the budget for a decent one, so I'm not sure.
The 997 Carrera S (for example) seems to have a "tame" tag compared to a 996 Turbo. Is the performance difference THAT different in terms of the drive? Less than a second difference to 60, and ~10 mph top end... doesn't appear so.

The 997... dull? How come the move?If you're thinking cheaper, and want some classic pork, I can recommend a 964 Carrera 2 coupe. It's too refined to be a special occasion car IMO. I had a couple of them over a good few years and used them daily, but just got a bit bored. They are great cars and I would have one again, but as weekend/sunny day car I'm not sure they're "special" enough. It's not really relevant, but I'm sure anyone gave my 997 a second glance - too common. Since I've had the 964 I've had people taking pics in the street, loads of thumbs up on the motorway etc. Not that everyone wants the attention, but makes it definitely makes it feel more special.
Probably helps as well that it is dog knob red....

Gotcha - and I don't underestimate that aspect - got a Cerbera now, so can relate It's not really relevant, but I'm sure anyone gave my 997 a second glance - too common.
