define roadholding ?

Lateral grip as in measured by "G" ?

Totally tyre dependent.

Lets say going round a corner at speed. I am sure it is not TOTALLY tyre dependant. confused

996tt on cups v 997S on contis, 996 pulls more G, switch the tyres and watch the situation reverse.

Well as with any test you have to assume things are as equal as possible.

Is there a reason why this matters ?

You cant generalise - it depends on track (eg CS 9secs slower round the ring according to sport auto)

In theory theres no reason why the 997CS shouldnt have higher lateral grip since it runs wider front rubber and same rear with a more modern chassis..... but if you chose the optional -20mm suspension on the turbo, I'd suspect advantage turbo.

That's not the question though.

I would equate roadholding to cornering speed.

We are not talking about lap times, it's roadholding. As someone said cornering speed and ability to change direction with grip. Lap times would also take account of braking, acceleration, power. aero etc.

I know this cos many years ago ( c 1970s ) I used read Cars and Car Conversions Magazine (CCC), especially Andy Dawson who wrote about this subject and put it into practice with his Datsuns and other project cars.

Agree.... hence my comment about lateral G.

According to sport auto, 997S pulled 1.35g and 996tt 1.3g in their lateral grip test.... the 235 section front tyres of the 997S and tighter chassis control of PASM sport makes me think thats about right.... as mentioned tho, I suspect it would be redressed with a 996tt with the -20mm option.

I reckon he means Autocar/Evo lap times.

Handling though involves the suspension as well, dampers and springs, basically how fast the car reacts to change of course.
