Hi Guys,

I have recently purchased a mint condition seal grey 996 C4S, I had a question about the 4 wheel drive, which the manual hasn't helped with.

Is this a permanent 4 wheel drive or does it have a clever system to direct more power towards whichever set of wheels, or even wheel needs it?

IE when I am pottling doen the A1 in the morning at 50mph in a straight line, am I in 4 wheel drive, or 2 wheel, or a bit of both!?!?

I'm a hoover for mechanical knowledge so please feel free to been as technical as you like and I'll do my best to keep up!

Many thanks guys,

Paul

There's nothing clever about it, sadly.. Look up viscous coupling. Sits between the rear and the front. It is reckoned to be 5% to front, minimum. It's more like not-fully-RWD than some kind of AWD.

Later 997 cars have a clever system from what I gather.

When I was looking I was told it was something like 20% directed to the front wheels.

5% (rising to 40% when conditions dictate)
