Just got the 996! ...some questions
Discussion
I took delivery of my (pre-owned) 996 C4 on Friday. Am really happy with the car in general (first Porsche), but I have a few questions which hopefully other owners will be able to answer :
1. There are more rattles than I was expecting, which seem to be coming from the windows / rear screen. Is this normal? Should I try and get them fixed? (Car is three years old, with 47k miles on the clock).
2. The stereo, which worked for a couple of days, has now conked out completely. It's the CDR-22, with the in-dash 4 CD changer. Whilst it's covered under the warranty, what's everyone's opinion on that stereo model? I wasn't particulary impressed when it was working - so should I just replace it with a fancy Alpine DVD sat nav / cd changer, with the retracting screen?
3. What engine oil does everyone use? The Porsche recommendation seems to be Mobil 1, but the dealer has always been using Esso Ultron (also fully synthetic). Should I just stick with the Esso or start to supply my own Mobil 1 to the service department?
Thanks in advance for all advice.

I'm in the process of buying my first Porsche at the moment too. Would it be rude of me to ask how much you paid for yours? I'm looking at the lower £30ks, but I've seen a lot of 996 at the high £30ks, and was thinking it might be an idea to spend a bit more to get the newer shape

Paul - my car's ocean blue, with black leather interior. Standard 17" wheels.
Scot - I bought my car from a main dealer, so had to pay top end of market value - £46k. It's a Carrera 4 tiptronic, one owner - supplied and maintained by the Lancaster's in Cambridge. I wanted an official 'Approved' Porsche for peace of mind - full parts and labour warranty.

Hi
1, Does the car have a sunroof? as this can cause some rattles, my old 996 C4 had problems with this.
2, Software can go on the stereo, simple process of re setting it by pushing 3 buttons at the same time, not sure what they are though, call the service dept at LC and they will be able to help.
3, I have always had Mobil 1, I doubt if you will need to touch the oil between service.
What salesman did you buy the car from at LC?
Hope this helps and enjoy the car.
Lee.
my old one had no rattles, well apart from a very small rattle from the sunroof when it was open. Was not bad enough to bother with. Sunroof used to drum like hell when it was open anyway..unless you opened the windows.
as you just got it dealer should sort the stereo for you, mine had a sony cd and that sounded superb through the standard fit speakers.
odd question over oil, dick lovett used the top Castrol oil - cant remember the one but has a picture of some german driver raplh somebody. If they will use your Mobil1 rather than charging a ridiculous amount for a service its probably worth doing.
