Hi,

I am currently restoring my Porsche 993. The car is undergoing a full respray as the paint has perished over the years.

I am having a proper job done whereby the windows are coming out etc so the finish is as good as possible.

I have had a call from the paint shop today telling me the window removal company they use can remove all windows with the exception of the front screen!!

Apparently they are worried the front screen may crack when being removed?

I wanted to re use the original screen really.

Has anybody out there had this work undertaken before or could recommend a screen company that can remove and replace front screen without cracking it!!

Where's Ed China when you need him !!!

Any advice would be great, the job is currently on hold pending further research.

There is always the risk of cracking when removing a screen.
I removed one recently which was not bonded in which I would imagine yours is and it still cracked.

I am sure some expertise will be along soon.

Good luck with the project.

Regardless of who you get to do it there is always a risk of cracking the screen. Might be an oportune time to put a new one in anyway. Get a heated one.

Snap!

Would love to see the finished car, I'm tempted to get the front of my 993 tidied up, who are you using to do the paint?

A new 993 screen comes complete with a bonded seal. Removing an existing screen means that this seal is lost. The rigidity of the car very much depends on a properly fitted screen. Replacing an existing item somewhat compromises this.
In the world of high performance motor cars there is no room for compromise; so dig deep and fit a new screen.

yes
Beat me to it Graeme!

Heated one is priced about the same www.heatedwindscreen.com and a fresh screen will make all the difference to a freshly painted car - same for headlmap lenses.

I presume you're having all new seals/trims everywhere, but make sure they get the special ptfe (or whatever it is) clear tape that goes around the windscreen aperture, under the screen trim/seal - about £28 from Porsche.

Bigkon,

Speak to the guys at PCT. They have a mobile guy that comes round and does their screens.

Nurburgsingh,

Manhattan Motors in Earlsdon are absolutely top notch. The place doesn't look like much from the outside but their work is superb. They have done work on my 993 and my daily driver. They do all the work for PCT.

Just checked and a heated screen is cheaper than standard I think - just £185 + VAT. Anyone can remove the old one if it doesn't matter about breaking it - fitting new one will be maybe £50.

So if you change to a heated windscreen what do you do about an aerial...

Speak to Tony at TC Coachworks in Barking, he does a lot of bodywork for the 993 and he owns one, he knows them bloody well.

What's the reason for wanting to keep the original?
Shirly it's worth paying the glass xcess and getting a new one fitted? Mines got a few wiper blade scratches on it and when I had a new one in the 968 it made a huge difference to night time driving

I need to check but my heated screen still has an aerial built in as the radio still works. Well I never use it but I'm sure it does or there has been some clever electronic wizardry by young Chris as 911 Bodyshop. Well I have a lexan rear window so we used the existing heated rear window switch to operate the heated front screen. Relays are needed I believe. A simple switch with relays would suffice. Don't ask me what a realy does though. I just drive the damn things smile
