...if I wanted to hang onto my impending 996 (48k miles on the clock, tiptronic) for a long time, with regular servicing and no abuse, how long/many miles until an engine rebuild/overhaul would be required?

I'm not planning (at the moment) to ever sell it - especially as high miles kills the market value, so all advice/opinions would be appreciated.

Are there any other (expensive) things that can go wrong, e.g. transmission/electrics etc.?

I've been told the latest engines are so well made that 200k would be possible. From the quality of the engineering it must last longer than most 'normal' car engines. Especially with decent oil changed reguarly.

I don't think there's anything to worry about with the engine or the electrics. If the previous owner was a really brutal hasher the gearbox might have suffered a little, but any good Porsche dealer should be able to give a verdict after driving it.
