Just read a couple of letters in 911 World about the rear screen cracking on the Boxsters. This has put me off going down this route and me thinks that a boxster purchase would be better left until the screen is made of glass.

Have others experienced this?

Don't think this is a boxster specific problem, same for any plastic rear screen. Treated well, (i.e. not folded when it's freezing cold) they should last very well. Would be the same for a 911 cab I would have thought.

I was told by the dealer to just 'karate chop' the window if you are putting the roof down when its a bit cold.

This seems to make it fold very cleanly, although I have not ruled out the possibility that he was just taking the p**s and delights in watching this idiot Kato(ing) his car at under 70 degrees.

The "chop" is standard practice for many Boxster owners. But it doesn't always prevent the cracking which some owners have experienced.

I seem to recall that one of the owners in 911+PW said his rear window cracked despite using the "chop". (Although I don't have the magazine to hand and could be wrong.)

I do the "chop". And its been fine for the year I've had the car.....

However. I did use a hardtop over the winter...

One of the articles in 911+PW actually said that he always did the chop but got a crack anyhow. This did happen when the weather was slightly cold.

If the 2003 Box S is fitted with glass as opposed to a plastic screen, what are the chances of a retro fit (TVR style) for older models?

Me & Mrs Greg were told by Road Range in Liverpool to give the window the old "chop f***ing chop" (to quote from Lock, Stock...) for the first few times, or in very cold weather.

Certainly now it seems to drop okay. I'll be interested to see a 2003, if only to see how the solid window affects the hood mechanism - presumably it will fold like an MR2's.
