996 Carrera 4 tiptronic (ocean blue/black leather). '99 'T', 48k miles. £45k from Lancaster Cambridge. Will collect it in a week's time. 1 owner - supplied and maintained by Lancasters.

Welcome to Porsche ownership. All I can say is it has some ups and downs! I've been a bit unlucky recently but love it to death just the same.

All you lot getting 996s is beginning to get to me. Hmmmn. Should I change my order from a MY2003 Boxster S? Ohhhh.

Let us know about your first experiences won't you. Oh and be careful with the odd w******r who thinks because you have a Porsche they have the right to be rude and dangerous around you. You'll soon get used to spotting them and being nowhere near them - quickly

It'll be interesting for me when my baby finally arrives. I've never driven a particuarly noticable car before, so I'll soon realise if people start treating me differently. The inevitable minority won't ever put me off though, life's too short.

Any horror stories or words of caution from the more experienced?

Yes, frankly.

1) Develop a level of deafness that means you appear unconcerned when the prannett in the car next to you starts shouting obsceneties - even though the wife is in the passenger seat.

2) Assume the s**t car in the side road will pull out in front of you until you are *certain* they will not.

3) Get in lane early. Indicating a lot, going slowly and appealing to drivers' better nature to help you make the exit you need is a doomed strategy...but its better than flooring it getting in front and having them decide to "pretend" to run into the back of you as "revenge" for being overtaken...

4) Become very observant. If a car behaves strangely on the road...you can guarantee it will behave strangely near your Porsche. Clock 'em and keep away.

5) When overtaking assume the Escort you are passing will floor it as you go by and that the oncoming traffic will speed up whilst flashing their lights and waving in attempt to kill you because you have a nice car.


Having said all that (and I could go on and on and on) most people are as polite to you as they would be to anyone...and may even be *more* pleasant as they just want a good look at the car. Always acknowlege a compliment and it'll make their day at no cost to you.

Nothing outweighs the pleasure of the car mind..so don't be overly worried or concerned - just do exercise a bit of extra care if you see a *potential* nutter.

Glad to hear that you've joined the ranks!

I bought my first Porsche last December (a 993) with a full service history from Lancaster Cambridge.

I don't wish to depress/worry you but if you look up my car under 'Members Cars' and read my sorry tale of woe you will see that Porsches aren't always as indestructable as we would hope . To cut a long story short, mine blew up! Full OPC service history? Pah!

But before I get the violin out I will say that I have just been very unlucky and since getting the car fixed I again know why I bought it in the first place! It's fantastic.

I hope you really enjoy yours.
