I thought I might start a thread on my latest car, and first working classic.
A brief bit of background: I've owned plenty of 205s over the years and always liked older French cars for some odd reason. I've now got a nice dry garage to keep cars in so thought it time to get something a bit different. There aren't many Peugeot 104s on the roads, probably 12 in total split between 3 door coupes and 5 doors.
This particular car: probably the only 104 "S" on the road. Imported from France in December 2018 by its previous owner and put back on the road having had a bit of welding. 1360 engine, gearbox integral sort of like a proper mini, 5 speed. I've got a long list of bits and pieces to do to it over the coming months: give it a thorough clean (not that it is mucky, but still lots of bits I'd like to clean up), fix the front reg plate on properly, replace a couple of door seals to reduce wind noise, sort a slightly sticking caliper, change oil and coolant, get the carb checked over, replace the track rods...

Love it, always fancied a Talbot Samba rallye. How does it feel to drive, like a fairly basic 106?
It's a while since I've driven a 106 so can't really compare. The 104 is quite soft - it does roll in the corners but it's much grippier than you'd expect. Lovely comfy seats, I wouldn't hesitate to do a long journey in it. There's a very characterful transmission whine as sort-of-like-a-mini the gearbox is the sump and oil is shared.Brief update. I haven't done much to it in the past couple of weeks. Noticeably I've still to fix the front plate on properly! Might take it out for a run this weekend if there's not too much wet weather.
Headlamp bulb replaced as full beam had blown on one. Other than brittle plastic grille clips it was a straightforward swap. Lovely old fashioned R2 45/40W bulbs providing adequate light.
And I've started cleaning the interior. Carpets were a bit dusty... still dusty but slightly less so! Reassuringly rust free under the rear seats.

Given the car a clean and a small service ready for a trip to Wales this weekend. Not much rust to see under the bonnet... thankfully! But what a bas*ard of a location for an oil filter. Really easy to change if you don't mind oil dribbling everywhere. Sump plug picked up some filings. Spark plugs look healthy.
I’ve driven the car plenty this autumn but now that the roads have been salted it’s SORNed until springtime. Hopefully I’ll get a few wee jobs done over the winter to tidy it up some more. Meanwhile some random photos:

The thread on the lovely Citroen LNA has spurred me on to give an update on the 104.
And the update is that it's still sitting inside and needing MOTd but there's little point doing that during covid19. I have however managed to acquire a personalised number for it that I would never have spotted had it not been for another 104 owner, ebay and most of a bottle of red. Pics when the plates arrive and are fitted.

Yes!
Earlier, I posted in the LNA thread that I had an 1124cc Visa which I acquired when my Dad moved up to a BX with the 1360cc version of the same engine and it got to the point where we knew one was coming before we saw it, whether it was a Peugeot, Talbot, Citroen.
Or even, for reasons I could never quite fathom, a Renault 14.
The Renault 14 also used very similar ‘suitcase’ engines so that will account for the similar noises. Wow, a RHD survivor. Superb! Tiny numbers survive. Yours is the first pic of one I've seen. For parts:
- depending on the 4speed gearknob type you can get the square shaped ones as reproductions here: https://www.pieces-de-rechange-classic.com/15-l-av... If not then ebay france often has bits
- centre caps for the alloys: get yourself on to the facebook group (UK 104 Samba LNA Visa forum) if you're not already on there. There was a set on there a couple of weeks ago
- seat covers: no idea I'm afraid.
Prices of these despite rarity is low but climbing a bit. Good for buyers, bad for sellers! The only really valuable ones are the ZS2 coupes as only 1000 were made + motorsport pedigree. There are ZS coupes in good condition going for 6-8000euro abroad. 5dr cars much less.

Thanks so much for the info that’s great bud..Obviously my number is not the same as yours but really cool we have 104x that is such a coincidence.I live in Glasgow and my friend and i both think we have seen your pug104x number before..Could be wrong.I was welding today getting near the end of the holes.Bodywork next..I'm going to try to get its last MOT as she is 40 in 2022.Last time i had it on the road was 2003 i think..Cheers!
I only acquired my 104X reg earlier this year, from a plate dealer down south so no idea what car it was on before. Should get yourself on to the facebook group as it's a great resource for parts/knowledge. Once it's back on the road need to go on a meet - if nothing else for a photo of the pair of them!Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
