just thought i would post a couple of pics up to show you how the cars coming along, as you all know at 17 you cant do much to a car without the insurance companies raping your wallet so decided to do a couple of little subtle changes to make it look different, although its an mpv, its still cool for a first car, i paid £660 tptf for a years provisional insurance, which for me is £400 cheaper than a 1000cc corsa so i think its worth it plus its a 1400cc 16v and suprisingly it goes well, for what it is. any thoughts on any other mods and NO HALFRAUDS JOKES PLEASE i am not a chav neither do i like bodykits, 28"alloys either

ive added a front splitter, painted the stock steels 2-tone, gave it a full service and drove it for 3000 miles since april.

door and bonnet were like this when i bought it, thanks to the brother with his mitsubishi L200.

I would imagine that premium will rise substantially when you pass your test, sadly.

Are you the only named driver?

Cleaned up nicely. Personally I would get the dents removed before spending more on mods. Makes a big difference.

I am struggling to see any "mods" apart from the green rim edges and Laguna splitter, unless you count the "L" plate as one? wink

Cheapest quote on Confused.com for a 17 year old school kid on a provisional is £1000. Pass your test tomorrow and it immediately goes up to £4000 on that car from the same insurer.

Actually quite a cool colour and I like the wheels! Leave it as it is, it's cool.

i thought the wheels looked great afterwards, subtle yet different, the splitter is actually from a phase 1 scenic, not the typical laguna splitter, i was looking at buying colour coded bumper/mirrors/other trim, door and bonnet will be replaced before this, i was also looking at changing the exhaust, at the moment its hidden, i was thinking maybe twin exit maybe 2" wide pipes max, dont want it to sound like a corsa with a dustbin on the back just a nice growl at mid range, any other ideas for subtle mods?

Congrats on getting your first car, and good luck passing your test.

But please, don't waste your money on doing up an old Scenic.

Use it, abuse it and run it to the ground.

At which point it looks like you've got the space to use the Scenic as a field car.

Put the savings towards your next wheels in a couple of years.

i love it too much to do that, its done 118k so far and still going well, plus by the time i get back from my gap year i can sell this and be able to buy and insure a proper machine, i was thinking classic rwd ford anglia, escort, capri?, i like to be different, if i wanted to be a sheep i would of bought a corsa/saxo/fiesta, thats why a baught this £400 for a 2000 plate car, with fsh, its been in the family since 6 months old.

This, always this. Your car looks great now, a cracking first motor.

You've saved up for your insurance in the past so you should now start saving for the next car up the ladder in a year or two. Of course if you can pick up free parts or make additions for next to nowt then it's always good to tinker, but spending a grand or two (exhaust, bumpers, wheels, suspension etc) tarting up a shed is rarely worth it.

Just think what the difference between having 3k and 5k to spend on your next motor would make!

each to there own eyy, i know that its not exactly got much street cred but, and i also know you cant polish a turd, but if im going to keep this for a couple of years and get my no claims then i want it to look different to the others, i think for around £3-400 i can get a new door skin, bonnet, cc bumpers, mirrors varoius trim, keeping the suspension standard, also looking at getting a leather interior from a higher model this should be around £150 ive seen a few on fleabay

Really? Is it worth it? You could save the 300 quid for an awesome stainless exhaust or new bucket seats for your future classic escort. Much more fun than a door skin...yawn.

If you're gonna do anything to the scenic, rat it. Paint it matt black and fit lowering springs. It'll be different and cost almost nothing to do.

Nice one.

I'm a big fan of 'Alternative' First Cars.

I'm 20 and ive been driving my Mondeo since i passed my test at 18. I was fortunate as it was a free car and my mum has a huge NCB so it means that insurance is bareable.

Always funny seeing the sheep in their 1.1 corsas and fiestas or saxos revving their tinny little engines with their halfords fart cannon on the back then effortlessly pulling away from them at the lights.

With regard to mods.

Im a big fan of the subtle look. Outrageous body kits and 30'' rims are too 1997 for me. The seinic looks good as it is, sort out the dents and mabye colour code the bumpers like you planned and tbh I would leave it at that.

I eventually want to take on a sleeper Morris Project (i've been dicussing this in a seprate PH forum) but wouldnt spend a penny more on the 'Deyo' than i needed too. I think all ive done is replace the hubcaps as one was missing and replace the tax disk holder as it lost its stick, save the 'mod' money for maintenance and keep it running well, a clean reliable car is better than a tricked out dog.

Also think about your insurance. You'll be suprised how little you need to change to whack up your premium at a young age. £660 is very good insurance but once you've passed and are driving alone expect it to rise sharply. I was quoted £1000 FC as a learner and then the same company refused to insure me until i was 21 once i had a full licence.

Anyway, nice car, glad theres others out there breaking the mould!

Edit - Thought of some cheap / simple bits you may want to try that shouldnt raise the insurance

De-Badge it for a smoother look
Change the headlight bulbs - better vision at night and a cool blue look (if youre into that)

i was thinking of debadging the boot, i think the renault badge on the bonnet has a reccess behind it so i would have to mess around filling it and painting etc, definately sorting the door and bonnet out in the next month or so, then colour coded bumpers etc ill leave it at that i think, maybe a couple of little changes, im going to investigate the light bulbs, can i get green tinted bulbs and are they legal? also any ideas of how to improve handling, cant lower it, at the moment its running eco tyres on the front which are naff but i got the pair semi worn for £30, needed them for mot you see, brake pads/discs were changed nearly 1000 miles ago, i was thinking maybe a full set of toyo proxes or maybe getting 205/55 r 15's instead of the 185/65 r15's that it currently has.

Cant think of any way of improving the handling without lowering.

theres always anti roll bars and struts but they probably dont make them for a Seinic... can be expensive as well.

Probably the only way is a set of decent tyres which can, again, be expensive.

Handling on whats supposed to be a school run mum's shopping wagon is never going to be that fantastic so don't set your hopes too high! wouldn't reall want to splash out on expensive tyres myself as i wouldn't want to spin the tyres if i did!!

EDIT
I would think green bulbs are illegal. If you are using them as main headlights then VERY illegal but i have seen some golfs in my area driving round with red bulbs or very blue bulbs in as side lights replacements.
I guess its just a matter of un screwing them if plod whines, might get a £30 fine though
