As some of you may know, my boyfriend's grandfather has been building up a 1997 AC Ace, and this evening we had the privelige to take it out for a spin. Relatively inexperienced driver when it comes to powerful cars, RWD, 375bhp Ford V8 and greasy roads made sure the trip was a steady one but got the chance to push the pedal a little on the straights- very impressive acceleration (in the region of 5 secs 0-60, and that wasn't exactly gunning it) and of course the noise it made even at 2k revs was ridiculously good and addictive.

The number of looks we got from people was amusing- bemused expressions on people's faces as they tried to work out what the hell it was biggrin I believe there's only around 3 or 4 in the country.

Anyways here are a few pics of the car, and a video of engine startup. I think there's still a few niggles that need looking at regarding the running, but the main thing is that its finally roadworthy!

and video linky here... ps. the AC badge is on order wink

A friend of mine owned one of these for a few years. His was a reddsih brown colour. Given he also owned a Caterham R500 which he could peddle quite well I often wondered what he saw in the AC.

I remember being at Chobham test track in about May '93 when he was filming for the old format Top Gear. I was on a High Performance Club driving course which in those days was mandatory for those buying a high spec Caterham, my instructor was John Lyon. Back then Lyon thought Clarkson was an unsufferable oaf, gawd knows what he thinks these days. Jezza was trying to do some low speed narrtive on the car to camera in the back of a moving Range Rover. We managed to lap him on every take he did until the crew beckoned us for a word...

Haha who knows what he saw in the AC- I guess the rarity and general lack of seeing them on the roads could be a contributing factor. Plus the noise smile It'd definately still be on my list if I were looking for a V8!
