I know this is the powerhouse topic you've all been waiting for.

Basically as i've mentioned in a few threads I'm 18 had my license for a few months now but have not had a job therefore not been able to get a car on the road (My dad wont help me financially he says i have to do it on my own, which is a fair point.) Now i have a job i looked at putting my lovely cougar on the road, £4k+ A year on insurance wasn't that tempting so i set about finding a cheap runaround.

My friend just picked up a fairly tidy 306 1.9 Turbo diesel and now he wants rid of his old Escort. This is where i jumped in, he was asking £300 for it on class fields etc and had a few people with interest, I offered him £150 for it and he said he'd rather see it go to me (A mate) Than someone else.

It's a 1994 1.3L Mk5 3 Door Escort - Nothing special but the insurance is a damn sight cheaper (Around £1500-1700 i think) And for £150 with 8 Months Tax/Mot It's a steal.

Only Pictures i have of it (From when we were out one night) :

Oh thats mud not rust, excuse my crappy phone pictures wink

But yeah i dont actually have the escort yet, friend is bringing it up to mine once he gets the 306 (The guy he's buying the 306 from has to find a car to drive before he lets the 306 go) I should have it on my drive within a month though.

First things first, the engine is gutless. It's a 1.3 From the old Mk3 Fiesta's. 120K Miles on it, not too worried about that seeing as i've known Steve a year and the car has never failed to start/never had any problems bar minor things.

Once i get it the first thing I'm doing is giving it a damn good clean. Exterior/Interior.

The main thing I'm debating currently is if i just drive it until it dies and get something else (Hopefully gain some NCB from it etc.)OR Putting a bit of cash into it to keep it tidy/keep it running.

I think with a couple of quid here and there i can keep it fairly tidy/running well. I have the knowledge to do a lot of it myself I'm a motor vehicle student currently almost done with my level 2 (One Exam/One assessment away)And the stuff I'm not confident doing my college tutor will happily do (He's a family friend)

I will try to keep this thread updated as stuff happens and would like to hear your guys opinions. Thanks for reading

Oh. Forgot to mention the problems with it.

-Front two tyres are on about 1.8 Tread so will need replacing soon.

-The 'Exhaust' isn't an exhaust as such, its a piece of scaffolding pipe. (Passed the MOT like it.) So i'll probably pick one up form the scrappy.

THE SPOILER. It's so rubbish but i don't want to take it off, it reminds me and friends of many happy times biggrin

Paints faded but i don't care much about that.

Apart from that its sound (Engines gutless but sound nevertheless)

my first car [aged 18] was a 5dr mk5 1.6glxi. utter pile of ste but i forgave it everything given that i lived in the middle of nowhere and it gave me a social life.

funny how things change in 11years though, my insurance was £640 fully comp having passed my test 4 months previously!

Fully comp on this 1.3L Gutless hunk of metal would be like £2K..

have you actually checked on the insurance?? mine is cheaper to insure fully comp than it is TPFT.

My cougar is cheaper fully comp than TPFT but thats not the case with the escort, its dependent on lots of things.
